Sleep is a vital component of a healthy lifestyle, and its importance cannot be overstated, especially among students. In 2023, a study was conducted to explore the relationship between sleep patterns and blood pressure among students of the Faculty of Medicine, Prima Indonesia University. This study aimed to identify whether sleep disorders that are often experienced by students can contribute to health problems such as hypertension.

Understanding the Importance of Sleep and Blood Pressure

Hypertension is a chronic condition characterized by an increase in blood pressure above the normal limit. This condition can trigger various other health problems, including heart, eye, and kidney disorders. Various risk factors can cause hypertension, one of which is sleep disorders. Students often experience sleep disorders due to pressure from academic demands, such as college assignments and examinations. Therefore, it is essential to understand how much the impact of sleep patterns on student blood pressure.

Research Methodology: A Cross-Sectional Study

This study was conducted with a cross-sectional method, involving students of the Faculty of Medicine, Prima Indonesia University from class 2020 to 2022. Research samples were taken based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, using quota sampling techniques. The data obtained was then analyzed using the Chi-Square test to find a relationship between sleep patterns and blood pressure.

Research Results: A Surprising Finding

Of the 85 respondents involved in the study, the results showed that 49 people (57.6%) had poor sleep patterns, while 36 people (42.9%) had good sleep patterns. Regarding blood pressure, 11 people (12.9%) have normal blood pressure, 35 people (41.2%) are in the pre-hypertension category, 33 people (38.8%) experienced hypertension level 1, and 6 people (7.1%) suffering from hypertension level 2. The results of the chi-square test showed the absence of a significant relationship between sleep patterns and blood pressure (p value = 0.929).

Additional Analysis and Explanation: The Role of Other Factors

Although many previous studies show that sleep disorders can affect blood pressure, the results of this study show different results. One possibility is that although the majority of students experience poor sleep patterns, other factors such as eating patterns, stress levels, and physical activity also play an important role in determining blood pressure.

Hypertension in students of the Faculty of Medicine can also be influenced by genetic factors, as well as daily living habits that are not always focused on sleep patterns. For example, students often experience high stress due to academic burden, which in turn can affect their mental and physical health, and change the way the body responds to pressure.

The Importance of Health Education Programs

It is essential to realize that although this research does not find a significant relationship between sleep patterns and blood pressure, there is still an effort to increase awareness about the importance of sleep quality and healthy lifestyle among students. Health education programs that focus on stress management, the importance of quality sleep, and a healthy lifestyle must be considered to support overall student health.

Conclusion: A Call for Further Research

The conclusion of this study is that there was no significant relationship between sleep patterns and blood pressure among students of the Faculty of Medicine, Prima Indonesia University in 2023. However, the results of this study opened up space for further research that could consider other factors that might contribute against hypertension among students. Better knowledge and awareness of a healthy lifestyle is very necessary to support the health of students in the future.
