Introduction

The city of Medan, located in the province of North Sumatra, Indonesia, is a rapidly growing urban area with a high population density. As a result, the city is facing various environmental challenges, including air pollution, which can have a significant impact on the health of urban vegetation. One of the most common tree species found in Medan is the mahogany tree (Swietenia macrophylla King), which is known for its ability to thrive in a variety of environments. However, the impact of air pollution on mahogany trees in Medan has not been extensively studied.

Background

Chlorophyll is a green pigment found in plants that plays a crucial role in photosynthesis, the process by which plants convert sunlight into energy. Chlorophyll levels can be used as an indicator of a plant's health and ability to carry out photosynthesis. Stomata density, on the other hand, is an important parameter that can help in understanding how plants adapt to their environmental conditions. Stomata are small pores on the surface of leaves that allow gas exchange between plants and the environment.

Methodology

This study was conducted in various locations in Medan, including the Medan 1 Industrial Estate, Jalan HM Yamin, Sibolangit Campsite, and Tri Dharma Forest. The study was carried out from August 2015 to February 2016, and the purpose was to observe chlorophyll levels and stomata density in mahogany trees, as well as their relationship with motor vehicle activity and lead content in several locations in Medan.

Results

The results of this study showed that the highest chlorophyll content was found in the Medan 1 Industrial Estate with a value of 23.41 mg/L, followed by Jalan HM Yamin (19.95 mg/L), Sibolangit Campsite (14.57 mg/L), and Tri Dharma Forest (12.90 mg/L). As for the stomata density, the location with the highest density was Sibolangit Campsite (59.85 stomata/mm²), followed by the Medan Industrial Estate 1 (50.72 stomata/mm²), Jalan HM Yamin (48.58 stomata/mm²), and Tri Dharma Forest (46.86 stomata/mm²).

Analysis of Chlorophyll Content and Stomata Density

High chlorophyll levels can be interpreted as an indication that the plant is in good condition and is able to carry out optimal photosynthesis. Chlorophyll is an important pigment that functions to absorb sunlight and convert them into energy. Locations that have high chlorophyll content, such as the Medan 1 Industrial Estate, may have better environmental conditions for mahogany growth than other locations.

High stomata density in Sibolangit campsite shows that mahogany at that location may adapt well to weather and environmental conditions, although it may also show a greater need for water loss regulation.

It is worth noting that this study found that motor vehicle activity and lead content did not show a significant relationship with chlorophyll levels and stomata density in mahogany trees in the location under study. These findings may indicate that although air pollution due to motor vehicles exists, mahogany plants have the ability to adapt and maintain chlorophyll levels and relatively stable stomata density.
