Introduction

Traffic accidents are a significant concern in many cities around the world, including Medan, Indonesia. Despite efforts by the police to increase driving awareness and enforce traffic rules, the problem of traffic accidents remains a challenge. The lack of awareness and compliance of motorists in following traffic rules is still the main cause of accidents. In this study, we aim to investigate the relationship between the number of traffic accidents and the number of traffic officers in Medan City from 2012 to 2016.

Background

Traffic accidents are incidents involving motorized vehicles and other objects, which often result in material losses and even casualties. In Medan, the police have tried to conduct socialization, raids, and various other actions to increase driving awareness, but the problem of traffic accidents remains a challenge. The lack of awareness and compliance of motorists in following traffic rules is still the main cause of accidents.

Methodology

In this study, we used a statistical approach to analyze the relationship between the number of traffic accidents and the number of traffic officers in Medan City from 2012 to 2016. We calculated the association coefficient value and the value of t count to determine the significance of the relationship. The results showed that the association coefficient value was 0.916 and the value of t count was 3,958. We also used distribution tables to analyze the relationship further.

Results

The results of this study indicate a significant relationship between the number of traffic accidents and the number of traffic officers in Medan City. The association coefficient value of 0.916 indicates a strong positive correlation between the two variables. The value of t count of 3,958 is greater than the t table value of 3.18, which indicates that the null hypothesis is rejected and the alternative hypothesis is accepted.

Analysis of the Relationship between Traffic Accidents and the Number of Officers

The more traffic officers in the field, the higher the level of driver's compliance with traffic rules. However, this does not only depend on the number of officers, but also on their efficiency and effectiveness in carrying out their duties. Intensive socialization and persuasive approaches carried out by officers can affect public awareness. Therefore, training for traffic officers to improve communication skills and interactions with motorists is very important.

Efforts to Improve Traffic Safety

One way to reduce the number of accidents is to improve traffic infrastructure. Good road construction, clear installation of traffic signs, and the provision of pedestrian facilities can help reduce the risk of accidents. In addition, the use of technology in traffic supervision, such as surveillance cameras, can be an additional tool to increase driving discipline. The community also needs to be involved in efforts to prevent accidents. Driving safety campaigns, such as traffic education in schools and in the community, can help instill awareness about the importance of complying with traffic regulations early on.

Conclusion

From this study, it can be concluded that there is a significant relationship between the number of traffic accidents and the number of traffic officers in the city of Medan in 2012 to 2016. Therefore, it is important for related parties to continue to increase the number and quality of traffic officers, improve infrastructure, and involve the community in creating a safe driving environment. With joint efforts, it is expected that the number of traffic accidents can be reduced and the safety of road users can be guaranteed.
