Analysis of the Use of Online Catalog Systems at the University of North Sumatra

Introduction

The University of North Sumatra (USU) Library is one of the largest and most comprehensive libraries in Indonesia, serving a population of 32,144 students. The library has implemented an online catalog system, known as Public Access Catalog (OPAC), to facilitate users in searching and accessing library collections. This study aims to analyze the use of OPAC at the USU Library, with a focus on understanding the benefits and challenges of using this system.

Methodology

This study employed a descriptive method, with a sample of 100 respondents selected using proportionate stratified random sampling techniques. The questionnaire was distributed to respondents to collect data on their experiences and perceptions of using OPAC. The results of this study provide valuable insights into the effectiveness of OPAC in supporting the information needs of users.

Results

The results of this study showed that the majority of users (94%) understood the search process using OPAC, indicating that the system has been put to good use by the user before they head to the bookshelf. The display and features of OPAC were also found to be helpful in searching the collection. However, despite the benefits of OPAC, users still face challenges in finding collections on bookshelves.

Challenges in Finding Collections on Bookshelves

The search process using OPAC is based on an access point that uses subject keyword queries, author names, and titles. This makes it easier for users to find relevant documents. However, the difficulties in finding collections on bookshelves can be attributed to several factors. Firstly, there may be problems in the grouping of less systematic collections, such as new collections not being directly grouped in the right place. This can cause confusion for users when searching for certain books.

Physical Arrangements and Space Limitations

Secondly, the limitations of space and physical arrangements in the library can also contribute to the challenges in finding collections on bookshelves. In dense environments such as USU libraries, limited space is often available, and book structuring may not be optimal. The library needs to re-evaluate how to manage space and provide clearer instructions for users in finding collections.

Recommendations

Based on the results of this study, it is recommended that the library conducts regular training for users on how to effectively use OPAC. In addition, the library should also consider improvements in the layout and organization of physical collections to facilitate searching on bookshelves. By addressing these challenges, the library can increase user satisfaction and maximize the use of library collections.

Conclusion

In conclusion, although the OPAC in the University of North Sumatra's Library has provided significant benefits, there is still room for improvement, especially in the aspect of the physical discovery of collections on the shelf. Appropriate improvement steps can increase user satisfaction and maximize the use of library collections.

Future Directions

Future studies can build on the findings of this study by exploring the impact of OPAC on user behavior and satisfaction. Additionally, the study can investigate the effectiveness of different training methods in improving user skills in using OPAC. By continuing to evaluate and improve the online catalog system, the library can ensure that it remains a valuable resource for users.

Limitations of the Study

This study has several limitations. Firstly, the sample size was limited to 100 respondents, which may not be representative of the entire population of users. Secondly, the study relied on self-reported data, which may be subject to biases and inaccuracies. Future studies can address these limitations by using larger sample sizes and more objective measures of user behavior.
