Introduction

The use of manure by farmers in rural areas has become a common practice, but its impact on the environment and public health is often overlooked. In Lau Gumba Village, Berastagi District, Karo Regency, the use of manure by farmers has been observed to have a significant relationship with the density of flies and diarrhea events. This study aims to examine the relationship between the use of manure by farmers and the density of flies and diarrhea events in the village, as well as to identify the demographic characteristics of farmers who use manure.

The Use of Manure and Its Relationship with the Density of Flies and Diarrhea Events in Lau Gumba Village

The use of manure by farmers in Lau Gumba Village is a common practice, with 28 family heads using manure from various sources, such as cow dung, goats, chickens, and rabbits. The sources of manure come from various regions, including Pancurbatu, Binjai, Lubuk Pakam, Kabanjahe, and Lau Gumba Village itself. The use of manure by farmers has been observed to have a significant relationship with the density of flies and diarrhea events in the village.

Manure is an ideal breeding ground for flies, which can be disease vectors, including diarrhea. The density of flies in the village is in the high category (6-20 tails/block grill), indicating that the village requires serious attention to reduce the density of flies. The occurrence of diarrhea in the village is also quite high, with 47 people experiencing diarrhea in 2019.

Relationship of Manure Use with Flies and Diarrhea Density

This study found that the use of manure in the village of Lau Gumba has the potential to cause an increase in flies. Flies themselves can be disease vectors, including diarrhea. The occurrence of diarrhea in Lau Gumba Village is quite high, with 47 people experiencing diarrhea in 2019. Of these, 14 people are toddlers, 13 children, 8 teenagers, and 12 adults. These results indicate that the age of toddlers is most vulnerable to diarrhea.

Recommendation

Based on the results of this study, several actions are recommended to reduce the density of flies and diarrhea events in the village of Lau Gumba, namely:

The use of manure in the village of Lau Gumba has the potential to increase the density of flies and has the potential to cause diarrhea.
