Downdraft Type Gasification Model and Simulation Using Ansys: A Comprehensive Study

Gasification is a process that produces a combustible gas known as Syngas, which is produced from the conversion of solid fuel to gas through chemical reactions that involve heat and air. One method for analyzing and modeling gasification is to use Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), which allows us to predict the composition of Syngas. In this study, Ansys software was used as the main tool for running a downdraft type gasification simulation. The purpose of this study is to determine the combustion temperature performance and the value of each component contained in Syngas. In addition, this study also aims to find the best fuel composition in downtraft type gasification devices through simulations with different fuel mass variations and air velocity.

Background of Gasification

Gasification is an important alternative in biomass processing because it can convert unused energy sources into more useful energy. By using Ansys, we can get a clearer picture of the interaction between fuel, air, and temperature in the gasification process. The results of this simulation provide valuable insight for researchers and industrial practitioners to choose the most effective combination of fuel. In the context of sustainability, the selection of appropriate fuel and optimal operation of the downtraft type gasification system can contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing overall energy efficiency.

The simulation is carried out 18 times in three variations of fuel mass, where each variation is treated with six variations of air velocity. The parameters observed during the simulation include combustion temperature performance, the composition of the resulting syngas, and the efficiency of the gasification process itself. The model used in this study is a principle that is completed numerically using the second order pressure algorithm. The simulation is carried out using Ansys software, which is a powerful tool for running CFD simulations.

The results of this simulation indicate that the most optimal composition of syngas is obtained in mass variations of M3 (50% CKS: 50% husk) with air velocity of 25 m/s. Under these conditions, the composition of the syngas produced is 24.424% H2, 24.424% CO, 3.73% CH4, 4.22% CO2, and 42.283% N2, with a process efficiency reaching 16.7%. The results of this simulation provide valuable insight for researchers and industrial practitioners to choose the most effective combination of fuel.
