Resistance Test of Several IRR Clones of 400 Rubber Plants (Hevea brassiliensis Muell. Arg.) Against Corynespora Cassiicola (Berk. & Curt.) And Cassiicolin Toxins in the Laboratory

Introduction

The rubber plant, Hevea brassiliensis Muell. Arg., is a vital crop for many countries, particularly in Southeast Asia. However, the plant is susceptible to various diseases, including those caused by fungi and toxins. One of the most significant diseases affecting rubber plants is the Corynespora Cassiicola (Berk. & Curt.) infection, which can lead to significant yield losses and economic damage. In this study, we aimed to determine the level of resistance of several IRR 400 rubber series clones against Corynespora Cassiicola and cassiicolin toxins.

Background

The rubber plant is a tropical crop that requires specific conditions to thrive. It is native to the Amazon rainforest and is widely cultivated in Southeast Asia, particularly in Indonesia and Malaysia. The plant is susceptible to various diseases, including those caused by fungi and toxins. Corynespora Cassiicola is a fungal pathogen that can cause significant damage to rubber plants, leading to yield losses and economic damage. Cassiicolin toxin is a secondary metabolite produced by the fungus that can also cause damage to the plant.

Research Methodology

This study was conducted at the Sungai Putih Research Center Protection Laboratory, Galang District, Deli Serdang Regency, at an altitude of 80 meters above sea level. The research method used was a complete random design (RAL) with 18 treatments and 3 replications. The treatment given was spraying mushroom spores Corynespora Cassiicola and cassiicolin toxins in different rubber plant clones.

Research Results

The results showed that the highest intensity of attack Corynespora Cassiicola occurred in K3 clones (IRR 404), K6 (IRR 407), K8 (IRR 411), K9 (IRR 412), K10 (IRR 414), K11 (IRR 418), and K15 (IRR 423), which is 10.02%. While the lowest attack intensity is found in K16 clones (Rric 100) and K17 (BPM 1), which is 3.60%. The level of damage caused by cassiicolin toxins also varies between clones. K9 clone (IRR 412) shows the highest level of damage, which is 6.32%, while the K7 clone (IRR 409) has the lowest level of damage, which is 3.82%.

Classification of Rubber Plant Clones

Based on the results of the study, rubber plant clones can be classified as follows:

Hold: rric 100, BPM 1
Enough Resistant: IRR 409, PB 260
Medium: IRR 402, IRR 420, IRR 422
Quite Vulnerable: IRR 400, IRR 405, IRR 406, IRR 419
Vulnerable: IRR 404, IRR 407, IRR 411, IRR 412, IRR 414, IRR 418, IRR 423

Analysis and Implications

This study shows that the rubber plant clone has a different level of resistance to the attack of Corynespora Cassiicola and Cassiicolin toxin. This information is very important for rubber farmers to choose clones that are more resistant to this disease. It is essential to note that this research was conducted in the laboratory. Conditions in the field can be different, so the results of this study need to be validated through a wider field test.

This study also opens opportunities for the development of rubber plant clones that are more resistant to disease. This development can be done through plant breeding programs that utilize molecular and biotechnology techniques.
