Examination of Lung Function and the Role of the Sanitation Service in Prevention of Health Disorders in Road Women Workers in Medan City

Introduction

Road sweeper workers in Medan, Indonesia, are exposed to a high level of air pollutants, which poses a significant risk to their health. This study aims to examine the lung functions of these workers and evaluate the role of the Sanitation Service in preventing health problems. The study employed a cross-sectional design involving 38 workers who have worked for more than four years and are aged over 20 years without any work changes.

Background

Road sweeper workers play a crucial role in maintaining public health by reducing visual and physical pollution in their environment. However, their health is often neglected, and they are exposed to various health hazards, including air pollutants. The Sanitation Office is responsible for providing a safe working environment for these workers, but there is a lack of provisions for personal protective equipment, training programs, education, and routine health checks.

Methodology

This study employed a cross-sectional design involving 38 road sweeper workers who have worked for more than four years and are aged over 20 years without any work changes. The workers were selected using a latitude cutting method, which involves selecting a random sample of workers from a population. The study aimed to examine the lung functions of these workers and evaluate the role of the Sanitation Service in preventing health problems.

Results

The examination results revealed that 7 workers (18%) had obstructive disorders, 9 workers (24%) had restrictive disorders, and 10 workers (26%) showed mixture symptoms. This condition shows a high risk related to lung health, which may be caused by long-term exposure to air pollutants. The study also found that the Sanitation Office has not provided any provisions for personal protective equipment, training programs, education, or routine health checks, which is a clear gap in the worker's health protection system.

The findings of this study highlight the importance of proactive interventions in protecting the health of road sweeping workers in Medan. The Sanitation Office has a crucial role to play in preventing health problems among these workers. The study recommends that the Sanitation Office develops and implements intervention models that focus on the health protection of workers.
