Implementation of Information Literacy in Indonesian Methodist University Students in Information Search

Introduction

In today's digital age, information literacy has become a crucial skill for individuals to navigate and make sense of the vast amount of information available. The ability to search, evaluate, and use information effectively is essential for academic success, professional development, and personal growth. This research focuses on the implementation of information literacy among students of the Indonesian Methodist University, with the aim of evaluating the effectiveness of information search based on the 8TM empowering model. The study was conducted at the Indonesian Methodist University Library, which is expected to provide benefits for both students as library users, researchers, and for further research.

The Importance of Information Literacy

Information literacy is the ability to identify, locate, evaluate, and use information effectively. It involves a range of skills, including critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication. In today's information-rich environment, information literacy is no longer a luxury, but a necessity. Students who possess strong information literacy skills are better equipped to succeed in their academic pursuits, as well as in their future careers.

Research Methodology

This study employed a quantitative approach with a descriptive design. The research population consisted of all students listed as library users at the Indonesian Methodist University Library, totaling 6,328 individuals. Using the Slovin formula, a sample of 98 respondents was determined. The sampling technique employed was accidental sampling, and data collection was conducted using a questionnaire.

Research Results

The results of this study showed that the implementation of information literacy at the Indonesian Methodist University in searching information using the 8TM empowering model had various levels of effectiveness. The results are presented below:

50.6% of students succeeded in identifying what their information needs were.

Exploration of Source and Information (Explore)

66.3% of students were able to explore sources of information that were relevant to the topic they were looking for.

Selection and Recording of Information (Select)

Only 37% of students had successfully selected and recorded relevant information.

Creation of Works (Create)

A total of 48.7% of students succeeded in creating works from information obtained.

Presentation of Works (Present)

53.4% of students were able to present the work that had been written.

Analysis

The results of this study indicate that students of the Indonesian Methodist University still face challenges in several aspects of information literacy. Although the ability to explore information sources shows a positive number, the selection and organization of information still require more attention. This highlights the importance of in-depth training on how to assess and record relevant information.

On the other hand, the ability of students to present and provide an assessment of their work shows good potential in communicating their work. This is an essential skill for students to compete in the professional world after completing their studies.

Conclusion

The implementation of information literacy at the Indonesian Methodist University shows various results. Although there are aspects that are already good, there is still a lot of space for improvement that needs to be done. This research provides a basis for the development of further information literacy training programs for students, so that they can be more optimal in tracing and using information. With the right development, students will not only be more capable of searching for academic information, but also in the application of science in everyday life.
