Study of Determination of Leading Commodities Horticulture Sub-Sector and Food Crops Sub-Sectors in Binjai City, North Sumatra Province

Introduction

The agricultural sector plays a vital role in the economic development of any region. In the City of Binjai, North Sumatra Province, the horticultural sub-sector and food crops sub-sectors are significant contributors to the local economy. However, identifying the leading commodities in these sectors is crucial for effective regional economic development planning. This study aims to determine the leading commodities in the horticultural sub-sector, particularly fruits, and food crops in the agricultural sector in Binjai City.

Methodology

The data used in this study are secondary data in the form of a time series from 2014 to 2022. The data sources originated from the Central Statistics Agency of the City of Binjai and the Department of Food and Agriculture Security and Agriculture of the City of Binjai, and were supported by other library data. The methods used to determine leading commodities in Binjai City include Location Quotient (LQ) analysis, Shift Share Analysis, and Class Typology Analysis.

Results

The results of this study showed that based on the analysis using these three analytical tools, commodities that met the joint analysis criteria and had a positive coefficient were guava, duku/langsat, rambutan, mangosteen, soursop, melinjo, peanuts, rice, and sweet potatoes. These commodities have great potential to be developed and can contribute significantly to the local economy.

Superior Commodity Analysis

From the results of this study, several superior commodities such as guava and rambutan showed great potential to be developed. With the geographical and climate conditions that support, Binjai has the opportunity to strengthen its position in the production of this commodity. Planting guava, for example, not only meets local needs, but also has the potential to be exported, so as to increase the income of farmers and the regional economy.

Agriculture and Economic Development Sector

Although the agricultural sector is not identified as a base sector, this does not mean that this sector has no important value. Conversely, by utilizing superior commodities, the agricultural sector can function as a driver of regional economic growth. Training and counseling programs for farmers will be very useful for increasing knowledge and skills in sustainable cultivation.

Overall, this study provides strategic guidelines for policy makers in Binjai City in designing programs and activities that can support the development of superior commodities. Through strengthening the agricultural sector and the application of appropriate economic analysis, it is hoped that the City of Binjai can achieve inclusive and sustainable economic growth.

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Development of Superior Commodities: The government and private sector should invest in the development of superior commodities such as guava and rambutan. This can be done through the provision of training and counseling programs for farmers, as well as the provision of financial support for the establishment of new plantations.
Strengthening of the Agricultural Sector: The agricultural sector should be strengthened through the provision of support services such as irrigation, fertilizers, and pest control. This can be done through the establishment of a agricultural development agency that can provide support services to farmers.
Export-Oriented Agriculture: The government should encourage farmers to produce commodities that have a high demand in the international market. This can be done through the provision of training and counseling programs for farmers, as well as the provision of financial support for the establishment of new plantations.
Sustainable Agriculture: The government and private sector should promote sustainable agriculture practices such as organic farming and permaculture. This can be done through the provision of training and counseling programs for farmers, as well as the provision of financial support for the establishment of new plantations.

This study has several limitations. Firstly, the data used in this study are secondary data in the form of a time series from 2014 to 2022. This may not reflect the current situation in the City of Binjai. Finally, the study only considered the economic aspect of the agricultural sector and did not consider the social and environmental aspects.
