Exploration of Ornamental Plants in the Protected Forest of Lumban Julu Village, Lumban Julu District, Toba Samosir Regency, North Sumatra

Introduction

Indonesia is a country rich in biodiversity, including ornamental plants. Ornamental plants are a type of plant that has a high aesthetic value, so it is often used as a garden or home interior. The main purpose of this study was to identify the potential of ornamental plants found in the protected forest of Lumban Julu Village.*
The protected forest of Lumban Julu Village is a unique ecosystem that is home to a variety of plant species, including ornamental plants. This study aimed to explore the diversity of ornamental plants in this region and to identify their potential economic value.
The research was conducted by Genhard Sinaga, a student at the University, under the guidance of Yunus Afifudin, S.Hut., M.Sc and Lamek Marpaung, M.Phil., Ph.D. The study was conducted in the protected forest of Lumban Julu Village, Lumban Julu District, Toba Samosir Regency, North Sumatra.

Methodology

The method used in this study was a sampling of plot with a radius of 12.6 meters and a diameter of 25.2 meters, which included an area of 0.05 hectares. This sampling method was used to collect data on the diversity of ornamental plants in the protected forest.
The results showed that there were 12 species of ornamental plants in the Lumban Julu protected forest area. Among these species, the chicken claw species (Selaginella sp.) Has the highest important value index (INP), which is 32.6%. Conversely, the hedychium cylindricum ridl species. shows the lowest INP, which is 9.4%.
The Shannon-Wiener index of 12 species of ornamental plants was tested, which showed a value of less than 1, indicates that the level of biodiversity in the region is classified as low. This condition can be caused by various factors, including environmental pressure and human activity that can interfere with forest ecosystems.

Economic Value of Ornamental Plants

The research also conducts an analysis of the economic values of existing ornamental plants. Tiger orchid species become a species with the highest price per hectare, reaching Rp. 11,750,000, while the species of tree ferns have the lowest price, which is Rp. 550,000.
These findings highlight the importance of the use of ornamental plants not only for aesthetic purposes but also as a source of income for the local community. The economic value of ornamental plants can provide a sustainable source of income for the local community and contribute to the conservation of the protected forest.

Conclusion

Through this research, it can be concluded that the protected forest of Lumban Julu Village has potential that has not been fully explored, especially in terms of ornamental plants. Therefore, wise conservation and utilization efforts are needed so that this biodiversity can be maintained and utilized in a sustainable manner.
In the future, further research can be done to explore more about other species in this region and appropriate conservation strategies to protect and develop biodiversity in protected forests. This study provides a foundation for further research on the conservation and utilization of ornamental plants in the protected forest of Lumban Julu Village.
