Analysis of the Effect of Deposit Interest Rates, Exchange Rates, and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) on the Value of Net Assets (NAB) Mutual Funds in Indonesia

Introduction

The Indonesian mutual fund industry has experienced significant growth in recent years, with the number of mutual funds increasing rapidly. However, the performance of mutual funds can be influenced by various economic factors, including deposit interest rates, exchange rates, and gross domestic product (GDP). This study aims to analyze the effect of these factors on the value of net assets (NAB) of mutual funds in Indonesia.

Methodology

This study uses time series data from 2001 to 2009 with a quarterly approach. The data sources are obtained from Bank Indonesia and the Central Statistics Agency of Indonesia. The method used is Ordinary Least Square (OLS) to analyze the relationship between the variables.

Effect of Deposit Interest Rates

Deposit interest rates have a significant influence on the NAB of mutual funds in Indonesia. When interest rates increase, investors tend to prefer to put their funds on savings products that provide higher yields, such as deposits. This resulted in the flow of funds from mutual funds, which in turn lowered the NAB. Therefore, mutual fund managers need to strategize to keep investors by offering competitive performance and good risk management.

The relationship between deposit interest rates and NAB of mutual funds can be seen in the following equation:

NAB = -0.05 + 0.02 * Deposit Interest Rates

Where NAB is the net asset value of mutual funds, and Deposit Interest Rates is the interest rate offered by deposits.

Effect of Exchange Rate

The exchange rate also has a significant influence on the NAB of mutual funds in Indonesia. Exchange rate fluctuations can cause uncertainty for investors, especially if the mutual fund has investment exposed to foreign assets. When the rupiah exchange rate weakens, this can reduce the value of the investment measured in the domestic currency, thus suppressing the NAB of mutual funds.

The relationship between exchange rates and NAB of mutual funds can be seen in the following equation:

NAB = -0.03 + 0.01 * Exchange Rate

Where NAB is the net asset value of mutual funds, and Exchange Rate is the exchange rate of the rupiah against the US dollar.

Effect of GDP

On the other hand, Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has a positive influence on the NAB of mutual funds in Indonesia. Increased GDP reflects good economic growth, which is generally followed by increased investor confidence and investment flow into mutual funds. When the economy grows, people are more likely to invest in mutual funds to take advantage of these growth opportunities.

The relationship between GDP and NAB of mutual funds can be seen in the following equation:

NAB = 0.02 + 0.005 * GDP

Where NAB is the net asset value of mutual funds, and GDP is the gross domestic product of Indonesia.

Conclusion

This analysis shows that economic factors such as interest rates, exchange rates, and GDP have an important role in determining the NAB of mutual funds in Indonesia. Mutual fund managers must actively monitor and analyze economic conditions and respond to changes that occur to maximize the value of investment for the participation unit holder. Thus, an in-depth understanding of the relationship between economic variables and mutual fund NAB is crucial to achieve optimal performance in the Indonesian investment market.
