The Effect of Planting Media Composition and Auxin Soaking Length on the Growth of Saccharum Officinarum L.) Bud Chip Technique

Introduction

Sugar cane is one of the most important crops in the world, providing a significant source of sugar and biofuel. The growth and development of sugar cane seedlings are crucial for the success of sugar cane cultivation. The Bud Chip technique is a popular method of vegetative propagation used in sugar cane production. However, the effectiveness of this technique can be influenced by various factors, including the composition of the planting media and the duration of auxin immersion. This study aims to examine the effect of these factors on the growth of sugar cane seeds (Saccharum officinarum L.) using the Bud Chip technique.

Research Methodology

This study was conducted in the plantation area of PTPTN II Tanjung Jatti, Binjai, North Sumatra, with a height of 50-60 meters above sea level during the period April - June 2014. The research design used was a random design group (shelf) with two factors: the composition of the planting media (50:50, 70:30, and 30:70 % Topsoil soil: BLOTHING compost) and the length of the Auxin immersion (10, 20, and 30 minute). The observed parameters included the percentage of shoot growth, buds growth rate, plant height, number of leaves, stem diameter, leaf area, shoot wet weight, root wet weight, shoot dry weight, root dry weight, seed water content, shoot-ratio ratio, and seed quality index.

Results

The results of this study showed that the composition of planting media significantly affected the percentage of shoot growth (1 week after planting), plant height (6 weeks after planting), stem diameter (6 weeks after planting), number of leaves (4 and 6 weeks after planting), leaf area (8 weeks after planting), seed water content, shoots ratio, and seed quality index. Meanwhile, the duration of immersion of auxin significantly affected the leaf area (8 weeks after planting) and shoots ratio (8 weeks after planting). Interaction between treatments showed a significant effect on the number of leaves in 2 weeks after planting.

Discussion

The results of this study indicate that the composition of planting media has a more dominant effect on the growth of sugar cane seeds compared to the length of auxin soaking. The use of blotong compost in planting media is proven to increase the growth of sugar cane seeds. Blotong compost is rich in nutrients and microorganisms that are beneficial for plant growth. However, this study shows that the immersion of Auxin with the Bud Chip technique does not provide optimal results. Auxin is a growth hormone that functions to stimulate root and shoot growth. Soaking techniques conducted in this study may not be appropriate for the application of auxin to Bud Chip.

Conclusion

The results of this study provide important information about the effect of the composition of planting media and the length of auxin immersion on the growth of sugar cane seedlings with bud chip techniques. This information can be used as a basis for improving the quality of sugar cane seedlings and sugar cane yields in the future.

Suggestion

Further research needs to be done to determine the appropriate auxin application techniques in the Bud Chip technique, such as using the Auxin spraying or mixing method on the planting media.
The use of blotong compost as a planting medium can be considered as the right choice to increase the growth of sugar cane seeds.
Other considerations to increase the growth of sugar cane seeds are the use of organic fertilizer and biopesticides to maximize plant growth and health.

The results of this study have implications for the improvement of sugar cane seedling quality and sugar cane yields. The use of blotong compost as a planting medium can be considered as a right choice to increase the growth of sugar cane seeds. This study has some limitations. The study was conducted in a specific location and may not be representative of other locations. Additionally, the study only examined the effect of two factors (composition of planting media and length of auxin immersion) on the growth of sugar cane seedlings.
