Introduction

The growth of the industrial sector in North Sumatra is a crucial factor in driving regional economic development. However, the factors that influence the growth of this sector are complex and multifaceted. This study aims to examine the effect of investment and labor on the Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) of the industrial subsector in North Sumatra. The focus of this research is on three independent variables: foreign investment, domestic investment, and labor. The data used is secondary data in the form of time series for the 1986-2006 period.

Methodology

The analysis of the effect of independent variables on the dependent variable, namely the industrial subsector GRDP, was carried out using the Ordinary Least Square (OLS) method with the help of the e-views program 4.1. The OLS method is a widely used statistical technique for estimating the relationship between a dependent variable and one or more independent variables.

Results

The results of this study showed that foreign investment had a negative (insignificant) influence on the GRDP of the industrial subsector. This indicates that an increase in foreign investment in this period did not directly encourage the growth of the industrial sector in North Sumatra. On the other hand, domestic investment and labor have a positive (significant) influence on the GRDP of the industrial subsector. This finding shows that domestic investment and the availability of labor play an important role in moving the growth of the industrial sector in North Sumatra during the study period.

Deeper Analysis

The results of this study provide an interesting picture of the dynamics of the industrial sector in North Sumatra. Although foreign investment does not make a significant contribution to the growth of the industrial sector, domestic investment and labor are the key factors that encourage growth.
