Relationship of Knowledge and Attitudes of Laboratory Officials to Compliance Apply Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) at Pekanbaru City Health Center in 2008

Introduction

The importance of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in health facilities cannot be overstated. In the context of infection control, the spread of various diseases through blood and body fluids is a major concern. Effective implementation of SOPs is crucial in maintaining a safe and quality health service environment. This study aims to identify the relationship between knowledge and attitudes of laboratory officers with their level of compliance in implementing SOPs at the Pekanbaru City Health Center in 2008.

Background

The Pekanbaru City Health Center is one of the major health facilities in the city, providing essential health services to the community. The laboratory section of the health center plays a critical role in diagnosing and treating various diseases. However, the effectiveness of the laboratory section is heavily dependent on the knowledge and attitudes of its officers. A positive attitude towards SOPs is essential in ensuring compliance and reducing the risk of disease transmission.

Methodology

This study employed a descriptive observational research design with a cross-sectional study method. A total of 25 respondents from 17 Puskesmas in Pekanbaru City were selected using a total sampling method. The data was analyzed using univariate and bivariate analysis to assess the relationship between independent variables (knowledge and attitudes) and dependent variables (compliance with SOP), with the chi-square test method at a 95% confidence level (α = 0.05).

Results

The results of the analysis showed that there were 4 variables of respondents' characteristics that had a significant effect on compliance in applying SOPs. The attitude of laboratory officers with the value of P = 0.001, knowledge p = 0.004, age p = 0.045, and the working period p = 0.048 all have a significant effect. Meanwhile, the sex variables do not show a significant relationship to the compliance of the application of SOP. Through logistical regression analysis, the attitude of laboratory officers turned out to be the most dominant factor, with the value of P = 0.003, which is lower than the level of significance (α) 0.05.

Discussion

The findings of this study provide an important insight about the importance of increasing the knowledge and attitudes of laboratory officers in implementing SOPs. A positive attitude towards SOP not only increases compliance, but can also reduce the risk of spreading disease in health facilities. Therefore, it is recommended that further research emphasizes changes in the behavior of laboratory officers in the application of SOPs. More focused training steps can be implemented to increase the understanding and awareness of officers about the importance of SOPs, which in turn can have a positive impact on the quality of health services at the Puskesmas.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this study highlights the significance of knowledge and attitudes of laboratory officers in implementing SOPs. The findings of this study provide a basis for further research and policy development in improving the quality of health services at the Puskesmas.
