Advanced Processing of Oil Palm Factory Liquid Waste in Aerobic Ponds with Air Diffusion in an Effort to Preserve Environmental Quality

Introduction

The Palm Oil Factory (PKS) is one of the leading industries that contribute significantly to the economy, but its existence also poses serious challenges in terms of environmental pollution. Liquid waste produced by PKS contains high concentrations of organic substances that can pollute the environment if not managed properly. Therefore, effective liquid waste treatment is crucial to preserve the quality of the environment. One method that can be applied is air diffusion in aerobic ponds. This study aims to evaluate the impact of air diffusion on decreased levels of pollutants in PKS liquid waste by examining several variables such as waiting time, depth of air diffusion, and debit of air diffusion.

Methodology

The method used in this study is a factorial complete random design with three research factors. The first factor is the waiting time set at six levels, namely 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 days. The second factor is the depth of air diffusion consisting of three levels, namely 1, 2, and 3 meters. While the third factor is the air diffusion discharge which is also tested in three levels, namely 3, 4, and 6 liters per minute. This research was conducted with two replications to ensure accurate results.

Results

The results showed that the waiting time had a significant effect on changes in the quality of PKS liquid waste. The longer the waiting time, the value of Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Suspended Solids (SS), and pH in liquid waste decreases. The lowest BOD and COD levels were successfully achieved at the waiting time of 25 days, each with a value of 211.37 mg/L and 367 mg/L. Meanwhile, the lowest SS levels are recorded at the waiting time of 20 days with a value of 180.03 mg/L. These results indicate that processing by air diffusion method provides quite effective results in reducing pollutant levels.

On the other hand, this study also noted that an increase in waiting time is directly proportional to the increase in liquid waste pH. Initially, the liquid waste pH was at 7.3, but after 30 days, the pH increased to 8.0. This increase in pH can indicate a biochemical process that occurs during processing, which contributes to decreased pollutant levels.

Discussion

From this analysis, it can be concluded that the application of air diffusion in aerobic ponds can be an effective solution for processing liquid waste from oil palm factory. This not only helps reduce pollutant levels, but can also improve the overall quality of the environment. Therefore, the implementation of this technology should be a serious concern for related parties in the palm oil industry, in order to create a more environmentally friendly and sustainable waste management system.

Through appropriate application, PKS liquid waste management with air diffusion will not only reduce the negative impact on the environment, but also supports the sustainability of the palm oil industry itself.
