Understanding Akne Vulgaris: A Chronic Inflammatory Disease

Akne Vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the sebaceous glands, often experienced by adolescents and young adults. This disease arises due to various mechanisms, including increased sebum production, changes in follicular keratinization, colonization of cutibacterium acnes bacteria, and inflammatory processes. The pathogenesis of Akne Vulgaris is complex and multifactorial, making it challenging to develop effective prevention and treatment strategies. Despite ongoing research, one of the factors that has the potential to influence the development of this disease is facial skin hydration. This study aims to analyze the relationship between the level of facial skin hydration and the severity of the Akne Vulgaris.

Research Methods: Observational Analytic Study with Cross-Sectional Cutting Approach

This research is an observational analytic study with a cross-sectional cutting approach. This study involved 40 subjects with Akne Vulgaris and 40 subjects without Akne Vulgaris. The entire subject underwent measurement of facial skin hydration using the Corneometer CM 825, while the severity of the Akne Vulgaris was judged using the Lehmann criteria. The data collected was then analyzed using the Spearman correlation test, with research that had received approval from the Health Research Ethics Commission, Faculty of Medicine, University of North Sumatra.

Research Results: A Significant Relationship between Facial Skin Hydration and Akne Vulgaris Severity

Of the 40 subjects of Akne Vulgaris involved in the study, the majority are women (65%) with an average age of 19.6 ± 1.86 years. In terms of severity, most of the subjects show a moderate degree of severity (50%), followed by a degree of mild severity (42.5%) and weight (7.5%). Interestingly, the level of facial skin hydration in the subject of the Akne Vulgaris shows that 92.5% of them have a relatively good hydration. However, the level of facial skin hydration of the subject of the Akne Vulgaris was lower than the subject without Akne Vulgaris, with a significant P value of 0.002. In addition, also found a significant relationship between the level of facial skin hydration with the severity of the Akne Vulgaris, with the value of moderate correlation strength (p <0.001, r = -0.453).
