Introduction

Pain is a common complaint experienced by osteoarthritis patients, significantly affecting their quality of life. This study aims to investigate the relationship between pain interference and pain intensity in osteoarthritis patients receiving treatment at the Adam Malik Hospital Medan.

Methodology

This research employed a descriptive correlation approach with a cross-sectional method. A total of 30 respondents were involved in the study, which was conducted from April to June 2019. To measure pain interference, researchers utilized the Brief Pain Inventory (BPI) questionnaire, while pain intensity was assessed using a numerical assessment scale (NRS).

Results

The results of the study revealed that more than half of the respondents (53.3%) experienced very disturbing pain interference, while less than half (46.7%) reported severe pain levels. The relationship between pain interference and pain intensity was tested using Pearson Product Moment analysis, which produced a significance value (p = 0.00) and a correlation coefficient (R = 0.73). This indicates a significant and strong positive correlation between the two variables, suggesting that individuals experiencing high levels of pain interference tend to have higher pain intensity levels, and vice versa.
