Mesofauna's Diversity of Marks: A Study on the Impact of Palm Oil Tree Management on Mesofauna in Aek Pancur Garden

Introduction

The palm oil industry has been a significant contributor to the economy of many countries, including Indonesia. This study aims to examine the existence of mesofauna in the land and its impact on the management of oil palm stems after being cut down.

Background

The palm oil industry has been growing rapidly in recent years, with Indonesia being one of the largest producers of palm oil in the world. However, the process of palm oil production has a significant impact on the environment, including the type and population of mesofauna in the former palm tree ecosystem. Mesofauna, which includes small animals such as insects, worms, and other invertebrates, play a crucial role in the decomposition process and nutrient cycling in the soil. The management of oil palm stems after being cut down is a critical aspect of palm oil production, as it can affect the health of the plantation ecosystem and the sustainability of oil palm agriculture.

Methodology

This study was conducted at the Aek Pancur Garden, Tanjung Morawa District, Deli Serdang Regency, from May to November 2018. The study involved several locations, including the Medan Palm Oil Palm Research Center Laboratory and Soil Biology Laboratory at the Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra. Three types of treatments were applied: First, the replanting area with a Rumpukan system that only relies on fallen stems; Second, the replanting area with a chipping system (chipping) after logging; And third, the replanting area without the presence of old palm stems. The results showed a significant diversity of mesofauna, with details consisting of 1 phylum, 5 classes, 1 sub-class, 13 orders, and 22 families.

Findings and Analysis

RUMPUT AREA

In the area with a dumpling system, found the density of the mesofauna population reaches 1120 individuals/m². Especially, mesofauna from the family Staphylinidae shows the ability to survive and breed well. This shows that this type of mesofauna has a good adaptation to the environment of the former falling, which may be influenced by the availability of organic matter from rotted fallen stems.

Chipping area

In chipping treatment, the density of the mesofauna population increased to 1200 individuals/m². Here, family Phthiracaridae, Haplozetidae, Staphylinidae, and Formicidae can develop well. The enumeration process can increase soil aeration and speed up the decomposition process, create better conditions for the growth of mesofauna. The existence of variations in the type of mesofauna also shows that proper post-fund management can increase biodiversity.

Area without palm stems

In an area without old palm stems, the number of mesofauna was recorded as many as 880 individuals/m². In this condition, the Family Poronoticae looks able to survive and develop. Although the number is less than other treatments, the existence of this mesofauna shows that the ecosystem can still support the life of mesofauna even in limited conditions.

Conclusion

From this study, it was clear that the method of managing oil palm stems after election had a significant impact on the diversity and population of mesofauna in the soil. Different treatment also has a different influence on the diversity of mesofauna, which in turn can affect the health of the plantation ecosystem. Efforts to improve plant management can be a strategic step to maintain and improve biodiversity in the plantation area, as well as support the sustainability of oil palm agriculture in the future.

Through this research, it is expected to provide useful information for plantation managers and researchers in understanding the dynamics of post-transport ecosystems, so that they can take the right steps for sustainable conservation and management of natural resources.
