Introduction

The transition of television broadcasts in Indonesia from analog to digital has brought about significant changes in broadcasting technology. Digital Video Broadcasting-Terrestrial (DVB-T) is the standard applied to digital TV broadcasts, replacing the previous broadcasting method. In this context, this study focuses on the design and simulation of microstrip antennas with a rectangular-shaped patch equipped with a slot-U, designed to operate at a frequency of 586 MHz. This antenna serves as a recipient of digital TV broadcasts in Indonesia.

Background

The transition to digital broadcast efforts require an antenna that is able to receive signals well. The microstrip antenna designed in this study has a slot-U, which aims to increase operational bandwidth. With wider bandwidth, this antenna is expected to work optimally in the specified DVB-T frequency range, which is between 478 to 694 MHz. This is very important to ensure good signal reception, especially given the variation in signal strength in various locations. The design of the antenna is crucial in ensuring that it can receive signals effectively, and the addition of a slot-U is expected to improve its performance.

Methodology

Antenna simulation is carried out using Ansys HFSS software, which is a strong tool for electromagnetic analysis. The process of making or manufacturing antenna is based on the results of the simulation obtained. The test was carried out to evaluate the design of the designed antenna, with a focus on several key parameters such as Return Loss, Voltage Standing Wave Ratio (VSWR), Bandwidth, and Gain. The simulation results are used to optimize the design of the antenna and ensure that it meets the required performance parameters.

Design of the Rectangular Slot-U Microstrip Antenna

The rectangular slot-U microstrip antenna designed in this study has a patch size of 30 mm x 40 mm, with a slot-U size of 10 mm x 20 mm. The antenna is designed to operate at a frequency of 586 MHz, which is within the DVB-T frequency range. The antenna is made of a substrate material with a thickness of 1.6 mm and a dielectric constant of 4.4. The antenna is designed to have a wide bandwidth, which is achieved by the addition of a slot-U to the rectangular patch.

Simulation Results

The simulation results showed good antenna performance, with a return loss of -20.67 dB and VSWR of 1.07. This parameter shows that the antenna has high efficiency in receiving signals. The antenna bandwidth that was achieved ranged from 411 to 859 MHz, which clearly exceeded the required DVB-T frequency range. In addition, antenna gain reaches 3.9 dB, which is also higher than the desired minimum target of 3 dB. Experimental Results

The experimental results showed good agreement with the simulation results. The return loss and VSWR of the antenna were measured to be -20.67 dB and 1.07, respectively. The antenna bandwidth was measured to be 411 to 859 MHz, which exceeded the required DVB-T frequency range. The antenna gain was measured to be 3.9 dB, which is higher than the desired minimum target of 3 dB. The experimental results confirm the effectiveness of the design of the rectangular slot-U microstrip antenna in receiving digital TV broadcasts.

Conclusion

The rectangular slot-U microstrip antenna designed in this study has fulfilled all the desired performance parameters for digital TV broadcasts. With a good return loss, low VSWR, wide bandwidth, and adequate gain, this antenna is an effective solution for receiving digital TV broadcasts in Indonesia. With the support of the right antenna technology, it is hoped that people can enjoy digital television broadcasts with better and stable quality. This research opens the way for further development in antenna technology in the digital age.
