Analysis of Cane Farming Efficiency (Case Study: Kwala Begumit Village, Stabat District, Langkat Regency)

Introduction

Sugarcane farming is a vital agricultural activity in many parts of the world, providing a significant source of income for farmers and contributing to the economy of rural communities. In Indonesia, sugarcane farming is a major crop in several regions, including Langkat Regency in North Sumatra. This study aims to analyze the level of production and income from sugar cane farming, as well as evaluating the efficiency of the use of production factors in the farming activity in Kwala Begumit Village, Stabat District, Langkat Regency.

Methodology

The study was conducted in Kwala Begumit Village, Stabat District, Langkat Regency, which was selected purposively due to its significant sugarcane production. The sample size was determined using the Slovin method, which produced 51 sugar cane farmers from the total population of 103 farmers. The data collection was done through a survey, and the data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics and efficiency analysis.

Results

The results of the study showed that the rate of sugarcane production in Kwala Begumit Village reached 75.5 tons/ha/mt, which is higher than the national average of 70 tons/ha/mt. However, this figure is still relatively low when compared to the results of research conducted by the Agricultural Research and Development Agency, which recorded 135 tons/ha/mt. The income from sugar cane farming in Kwala Begumit Village also reflects promising prospects, with a total income of Rp. 20,682,191 per ha per MT.

The value of sugarcane feasibility in this area can be seen from the cost ratio (R/C) which reaches 2.8, which shows that sugar cane farming is not only financially feasible, but also beneficial for farmers. However, even though this farm business provides good income, the efficiency analysis of the use of production factors shows unsatisfactory results. The efficiency value of the technical use of factors of production is only 0.99, and both the value of price efficiency and the economy each only reached 0.12.

The results of this study provide a clear picture of the challenges and potential in the development of sugar cane farming in the village of Kwala Begumit. Although sugar cane production in this village is higher than the level of national production, efforts need to be made to improve the efficiency of the use of factors of production. This can be achieved in various ways, such as the application of better agricultural technology, training for farmers regarding efficient cultivation techniques, as well as more optimal management of resources.

Environmental factors, weather, and policy support from local governments can also play an important role in increasing farm efficiency. The government and related institutions should provide support in the form of agricultural counseling and access to modern technology that can help farmers in increasing yields and the efficiency of the use of agricultural inputs.

Overall, this research is an important foundation for the development of strategies and policies that can encourage productivity and efficiency of sugar cane farming in Kwala Begumit Village, as well as providing greater economic benefits for farmers in the area. Thus, sugar cane farming is expected to be a source of sustainable and beneficial livelihood for the local community.

This study has several limitations, including:

Limited sample size: The sample size of 51 sugar cane farmers may not be representative of the entire population of farmers in Kwala Begumit Village.
