Introduction

The prevalence of malnutrition and inadequate nutritional intake among children under five years in Simpang Tiga District, Aceh Besar Regency, has been a pressing concern in recent years. According to data obtained from the district, the number of children experiencing malnutrition and inadequate nutritional intake increased in 2008 and 2009. This alarming trend highlights the importance of understanding the factors that affect the pattern of consumption of baby food. This study aims to analyze the influence of family types and socioeconomic conditions on baby food consumption patterns in Simpang Tiga District, Aceh Besar Regency.

Background

Malnutrition and inadequate nutritional intake among children under five years are significant public health concerns worldwide. In Indonesia, the prevalence of malnutrition and inadequate nutritional intake among children under five years is a major challenge, particularly in rural areas. The Simpang Tiga District, Aceh Besar Regency, is one of the areas that have been affected by this issue. The district has a high prevalence of malnutrition and inadequate nutritional intake among children under five years, which is a major concern for the health and well-being of the community.

Methodology

This study used a cross-sectional survey study design to analyze the influence of family types and socioeconomic conditions on baby food consumption patterns in Simpang Tiga District, Aceh Besar Regency. The study was conducted from November to December 2010 and involved the entire population of 117 respondents. Data was collected through interviews using a questionnaire and analyzed using a double logistics regression test.

Results

The results of this study showed that the type of family and socioeconomic factors, such as the level of education, family expenditure, employment status, and the number of children, had a significant influence on the pattern of consumption of baby food. Families who have a higher level of education, expenses above Rp 5,000,000, and employment status were more likely to have a better pattern of consumption of baby food. Additionally, families with a higher number of children were more likely to have a better pattern of consumption of baby food.

Discussion

The results of this study are important notes for the Aceh Besar District Health Office and related institutions. It is recommended that they implement the Nutrition and Food Warning System (SKPG) program through food and nutrition working groups. This activity should include improving the quality of community education, providing employment opportunities, economic empowerment, support for family planning programs, and revitalization of posyandu and Kadarzi programs. Thus, the community can master the science of practical nutrition that can be applied in families and communities to meet optimal nutritional needs.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of understanding the factors that affect the pattern of consumption of baby food. The results of this study show that the type of family and socioeconomic factors have a significant influence on the pattern of consumption of baby food. Therefore, it is recommended that the Aceh Besar District Health Office and related institutions implement the Nutrition and Food Warning System (SKPG) program to improve the nutritional quality of children in the district.

Limitations

This study has several limitations. Firstly, the study was conducted in a single district, which may not be representative of other districts in Aceh Besar Regency. Secondly, the study used a cross-sectional survey study design, which may not be able to establish causality between the variables. Finally, the study did not control for other factors that may affect the pattern of consumption of baby food.
