The Level of Knowledge of Teenagers to the Tradition of Gondang Sabangunan in Balige District, Toba Samosir Regency

Introduction

The Gondang Sabangunan tradition is one of the local cultural heritage in Balige District, Toba Samosir Regency, which has high historical and social value. However, the results of previous studies showed that the level of knowledge of teenagers about this tradition is quite low. This is due to various factors, including technological advances that affect the interest of teenagers to explore and understand their own traditions, as well as the lack of support from the family environment in transmitting traditional values. Therefore, this study aims to measure the level of knowledge of teenagers about the Gondang Sabangunan tradition and identify the factors that influence their knowledge.

Background of the Study

The Gondang Sabangunan tradition is a traditional music and dance performance that originated in the Toba Samosir Regency. This tradition has been passed down from generation to generation and is considered an important part of the local cultural heritage. However, in recent years, the level of knowledge of teenagers about this tradition has been declining. This is due to various factors, including the influence of modern technology and the lack of support from the family environment in transmitting traditional values.

Methodology

This study used a descriptive analysis with a quantitative approach to measure the level of knowledge of teenagers about the Gondang Sabangunan tradition. The data was collected through observation and questionnaire, and then analyzed using the distribution table classified to gain a clearer understanding of the level of respondent's knowledge. The sample size of this study was 87 students at SMP Negeri 4 Balige.

Results

The results of the analysis showed that of the total respondents, 32.18% had a high level of knowledge (interval class above 67), while 66.67% were at moderate levels of knowledge (interval class 33-67), and only 1.15% were located at a low level (interval class below 33). The average score obtained was 16.6, which placed student knowledge in the medium category. This shows that even though their knowledge is quite good, it is still limited to the level of "tofu", without reaching a deeper level of understanding such as analysis, synthesis, or evaluation.

Discussion

The results of this study indicate that the level of knowledge of teenagers about the Gondang Sabangunan tradition is still classified as moderate. This shows the need to increase understanding and interest in local culture among the younger generation. To achieve this, there is a need for more support from family and community in cultural preservation efforts. Formal education in schools also needs to facilitate learning about local traditions so that teenagers can recognize and appreciate their own cultural heritage.

In conclusion, this study found that the level of knowledge of teenagers about the Gondang Sabangunan tradition is still classified as moderate. This shows the need to increase understanding and interest in local culture among the younger generation.
