Introduction

In the current era of globalization, the healthcare industry is facing numerous challenges, including changes in the epidemiology of disease, demographic structures, and rapid socioeconomic development. These changes have led to an increased demand for professional and efficient hospital services. Good management is essential in hospital management, especially in complex inpatient services. This study aims to evaluate the workload of nurses and their needs in the inpatient room of H. Adam Malik Hospital Medan.

Background

The healthcare industry is constantly evolving, and hospitals must adapt to these changes to provide high-quality services. The workload of nurses is a critical factor in determining the quality of care provided to patients. A high workload can lead to burnout, decreased job satisfaction, and reduced quality of care. Therefore, it is essential to analyze the workload of nurses and their needs to ensure that hospitals can provide adequate staffing and resources.

Methodology

This study used a descriptive qualitative research method, with data collection through in-depth interviews and observations in the field. Five nurses in the Rindu A room became informants in this study. The results showed that the workload of nurses was quite high due to the many tasks and responsibilities they carried. In addition, the number of increased patients is not proportional to the number of nurses available, which results in the quality of threatened services.

Results

The results of the workload analysis showed that the hospital requires additional nurses to meet the needs of patients. Using the Douglas method, a deficiency of 29 nurses per shift was obtained. While the Gillies method shows that the hospital requires an additional 68 nurses per unit. Meanwhile, according to the ABK method regulated by the Ministry of Health, there are 32 nurses in the Rindu A room (1 and 2) at H. Adam Malik Hospital, Medan.

Discussion

The results of this study indicate that RSUP H. Adam Malik Medan still requires significant additional nurses. Therefore, it is recommended to increase the number of nurses and administrative staff in the inpatient room. Adjustment of the nursing care assignment model also needs to be done to be in accordance with the number of patients and nurses in each shift. The development of the patient classification system is very important to calculate the nurse's workload more accurately, which can help in planning the amount of nursing staff needed.

Conclusion

By understanding the workload and the needs of nurses, hospitals will be able to optimize the services provided to patients, as well as increasing the level of patient satisfaction that results in better healing. The availability of adequate nurses not only supports the quality of service, but also creates a better work environment for health workers themselves. Therefore, it is essential for hospitals to prioritize the needs of nurses and provide adequate staffing and resources to ensure high-quality care.
