Introduction

Phosphorus (P) is one of the essential nutrients required by plants for optimal growth and development. However, the availability of phosphorus in soil is often limited, especially in ultisol soils which have low fertility levels. The use of natural phosphate fertilizers is a promising approach to increase phosphorus availability in soil. This study aims to explore the increase in the availability of phosphorus from natural phosphate fertilizer through the use of acid compounds in ultisol soils in the gebang.

Research Methodology

The research activity was carried out in the Laboratory of Land and Greenhouse Chemistry, Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra (USU) in Medan. A random design of non-factorial groups with 17 treatments was adopted, using four types of acid compounds: 2% lactic acid, 2% citric acid, 2% sulfuric acid, and 2% clanda acid. In addition, three types of natural phosphate fertilizers were used: without natural phosphate, Chman Island RPC, and RPM from Egypt. The treatment was applied simultaneously 10 days before the planting process.

Parameters Measured

The parameters measured in this study include soil pH, the availability of P, plant height, canopy dry weight, root dry weight, and plant absorption. The results showed that the administration of acid compounds can increase soil pH, availability of P, plant height, canopy dry weight, root dry weight, and plant absorption.

Results and Discussion

The results obtained show that the administration of acid compounds can increase the availability of phosphorus in soil. Of the three natural phosphate fertilizers tested, the results obtained show that fertilizer from Egypt RP produces better performance. In addition, sulfuric acid is proven to be the most effective acid compound in dissolving natural phosphate compared to other acid compounds.

The use of natural phosphate from Egypt RP as a source of nutrition shows better results compared to other sources. This may be caused by the phosphorus content in the fertilizer which is more easily dissolved in ultisol soil conditions. The success in this study shows that acid compounds not only function as a regulator of soil pH, but also have the potential to increase soil fertility through the management of nutrient availability.
