The Effect of the Use of Palm Palm Cake (BIS) in the Ration on the Performance of Broiler Chicken Aged 0-6 Weeks

Introduction

The poultry industry is one of the most significant contributors to the global food supply, with broiler chickens being a crucial part of this industry. The performance of broiler chickens is influenced by various factors, including feed composition, nutritional content, and the use of alternative feed ingredients. Palm kernel meal (BIS) is a popular alternative feed ingredient due to its high protein content and lower production costs. However, the optimal level of BIS in broiler chicken feed remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effect of different levels of BIS in the ration on the performance of broiler chickens aged 0-6 weeks.

Methodology

This study was conducted at the Biology Laboratory of the Department of Animal Husbandry, Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra. The study took place from January 10 to February 21, 2005. A complete random design (CRD) with five treatments and seven replications was used. Each test consisted of five broiler chickens. The treatments given were as follows: R0 (BUS FEED), R1 (feed with 5% buses), R2 (feed with 10% buses), R3 (feed with 15% buses), and R4 (feed with 20% buses).

Results

The results of this study showed that the highest feed consumption was in the R2 treatment with 10% buses, which was 601.67 g/head/week. In contrast, the lowest feed consumption was in the R4 treatment with 20% buses, which was 552.95 g/head/week. The highest average daily weight gain (ADG) was found in the treatment of R2, which is 299.51 g/head/week. Conversely, the lowest ADG was found in the R3 treatment with 15% buses, which is 279.60 g/head/week. The highest body weight was also found in the treatment of R2, which is 1843.57 g/head. In contrast, the lowest body weight was found in the treatment of R3, which is 1723.00 g/head. Additionally, the highest feed conversion ratio was recorded in the treatment of R3, which is 1.96 g/head/week. Conversely, the lowest feed conversion ratio was recorded in the R4 treatment with a value of 1.79 g/head/week.

Discussion

The results of this study indicate that the use of various levels of palm kernel meal (BIS) does not make a significant difference in the performance of broiler chickens at the age of 0-6 weeks. Although there are differences in the consumption of feed, ADG, body weight, and feed conversion ratio in each treatment, the use of buses in feed does not have a significant impact. This suggests that the optimal level of BIS in broiler chicken feed may not be as critical as previously thought.
