Analysis of the Effect of Corporate Social Responsibility of the Indonesian Banking Industry on the Profitability and Structure of the Company Capital for the 2010-2012 Period

Introduction

CSR disclosure is measured by the Corporate Social Disclosure Index (CSDI), which includes four main themes: environmental and energy themes, labor themes, product and customer themes, as well as social and general themes.

Results

The results of this study show that the overall CSR disclosure has a positive and significant influence on ROA. However, when viewed separately, only the theme of labor shows positive and significant influence on ROA. On the other hand, the results of the second model indicate that CSR has no significant effect on CAR, both overall or separately.

Further Analysis

The effect of CSR on banking profitability, measured through ROA, shows that an active bank in implementing and revealing CSR programs tends to have better financial performance. This can be caused by increasing trust from customers and other stakeholders, which results in increasing customer loyalty and, finally, increase bank revenue. Specifically, the theme of the workforce in CSR contributes positively, indicates that banks that pay attention to employee welfare and create a good work environment are able to benefit in terms of productivity and performance.

However, the identification of CSR's influence on CAR shows that although CSR practices are important for maintaining short-term financial reputation and performance, this does not necessarily have an impact on the capital structure. This may be because the capital structure is more influenced by bank internal policies and applicable regulations than social activities carried out. Banks may consider more capital aspects of capital in the context of a broader strategic planning than just focusing on CSR disclosure.

Conclusion

The results of this study provide important insights for the banking industry in Indonesia regarding the importance of CSR integration in business strategies. The disclosure of CSR not only functions as a tool of social communication, but also has the potential to increase profitability through increasing customer reputation and loyalty. However, it is essential to understand that this influence does not necessarily affect the capital structure, which is more influenced by internal policies and market conditions. Therefore, banks need to develop a balanced approach in implementing CSR which not only focuses on financial benefits, but also on broader social and environmental impacts.
