In the decision making process, Fuzzy Topsis is the right choice because of its ability to handle the uncertainty with using quantity multiplication operations from Triangular Fuzzy Number (TFN). However, in the weighting stage of Fuzzy Topsis, there are significant weaknesses in determining the right weight value. Calculation of weight carried out through a normalized matrix value requires better techniques to produce optimal decisions.

The Need for Smarter Method

To overcome this challenge, this research uses the Smarter (Simple Multi-Attribute Rating Technique Exploiting Rank) method at the weighting stage. Smarter is known for its ability to optimize the value of weight before continuing to the next stage, so it is expected to improve the quality of the decision produced. The use of Smarter in the weighting of the Fuzzy Topsis matrix shows better results. This result is clearly seen from the data testing in the case study of the determination of scholarship recipients at Al-Azhar Private MTs.

Case Study: Determination of Scholarship Recipients

In this analysis, there are similarities and striking differences between the results of Fuzzy Topsis and Fuzzy Topsis preferences with the weight obtained from the Smarter method. The similarity of the results between the two methods is that alternative 10 (V10) was chosen as an alternative received. Fuzzy Topsis receives more alternatives compared to Fuzzy Topsis that uses the weight of the Smarter method.
