Fabrication of Lithium Titanate Doping Al (Li4ti4,975al0,025o12) and the Study of the Effect of the Thickness of the Electrode Sheet on the Half-Lithium Ion Battery Cell

Introduction

Background

Lithium Titanate (Li4ti5o12) is a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries due to its high theoretical capacity, excellent cycle life, and relatively low cost. However, the development of more efficient and sustainable battery materials requires a deeper understanding of the electrochemical properties of these materials. In recent studies, the effect of the thickness of the electrode layer on the electrochemical performance of half-lithium ion battery cells has been investigated. The results of these studies have shown that the thickness of the electrode layer can significantly affect the electrochemical performance of the battery cell.

Synthesis and Testing Results

In this study, we synthesized Li4ti4,975al0,025O12 powder using a solid reaction method. The process of making anode sheets was carried out using the Doctor Blade method, where the coating thickness was varied to 100 µm, 200 µm, 300 µm, and 400 µm. The purpose of this variation was to evaluate how much the effect of layer thickness on battery cell performance.

Phase analysis was carried out using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) to identify the structure formed. The results of the analysis showed that there were two dominant phases, namely Lithium Titanium Oxide (LI1.333TI1.667O4) which reached 75.6% and the Ruthile (TIO2) phase of 24.4%. The increase in the portion of the lithium titanium oxide phase shows good potential in battery applications because this phase is known to have good performance as an anode.

From the Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) testing, it was found that the electrical conductivity of the sample increased in line with the increase in the thickness of the coating layer. However, when tested with Cyclic Voltammetry (CV), samples with a thickness of 100 µm, 200 µm, and 300 µm show a sharp peak of oxidation/reduction, signifying an efficient electrode reaction. Conversely, a sample with a thickness of 400 µm shows a widening redox peak, which indicates a problem in ion transportation.

Capacity Performance Analysis

Although an increase in the thickness of the coating layer has a positive effect on conductivity, it turns out that the performance of battery cell capacity actually decreases. Specific capacity and specific power of half-battery cells are reduced along with the increase in layer thickness. The best results are obtained from a sample with a thickness of 100 µm, which shows the filling capacity of 137.08 mAh/g and the emptying capacity of 134.3 mAh/g. This decrease in performance can be caused by an increase in the distance between active particles due to a layer that is too thick, which has the potential to inhibit the transportation of lithium ions into the anode structure.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this study demonstrates the importance of the thickness of the electrode sheet on the electrochemical performance of half-lithium ion battery cells. The results of this study show that the thickness of 100 µm is the most optimal in improving electrode performance. The increase in the portion of the lithium titanium oxide phase and the efficient electrode reaction observed in samples with a thickness of 100 µm, 200 µm, and 300 µm indicate good potential in battery applications. However, further studies are needed to understand complex interactions between structure, layer thickness, and electrokinetic performance. Through this research, it is expected to contribute to the development of battery material that is more efficient and sustainable.
