The Influence of Motivation, Intelligent Quotient, Emotional Quotient, Spiritual Quotient, and Knowledge on the Interest of Accounting Students at the University of North Sumatra

Introduction

The University of North Sumatra is one of the leading institutions in Indonesia, offering a wide range of academic programs, including accounting. The accounting program is designed to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in the field of accounting. However, the interest of students in attending the accounting professional education program is a crucial factor that determines the success of the program. This study aims to analyze the effect of motivation, intelligent quotient (IQ), Emotional Quotient (EQ), Spiritual Quotient (SQ), and knowledge of student interest in attending the accounting professional education.

Background

The population in this study was all active students from the accounting program of the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of North Sumatra, registered in 2013, with a total sample of 147 respondents. The results of this study showed that there was a simultaneous significant influence between motivational variables, IQ, EQ, SQ, and knowledge of students' interest in attending the accounting professional education. The F test shows that the five variables contribute significantly when analyzed simultaneously. This shows that all these factors are interconnected and influence in shaping student interest.

The Effects of Variables

Intelligent Quotient (IQ)

IQ as a measure of cognitive abilities has proven to affect student interest. Students who have high IQs tend to more easily understand the material taught in the accounting profession education program, so they are more interested in continuing the education. This is because high IQ students are able to grasp complex concepts and apply them in real-world scenarios, making them more confident in their ability to succeed in the field of accounting.

Spiritual Quotient (SQ)

SQ which reflects the ability of individuals to realize and manage aspects of spirituality also shows a significant influence. Students who have high SQ tend to have a positive view of their careers in the field of accounting and understand the importance of ethics in the profession, thus encouraging them to attend further education. This is because SQ helps students to develop a sense of purpose and meaning in their careers, making them more motivated to succeed.

Knowledge of the Public Accounting Profession

Students who know more about career prospects, challenges, and responsibilities of a public accountant are more likely to commit to professional education. This is because knowledge of the public accounting profession helps students to understand the demands and expectations of the profession, making them more aware of the importance of education and training.

Other External Factors

This may be caused by other external factors such as environmental conditions, social support, or personal experience of students who determine their interests. For example, students who come from families with a strong accounting background may be more motivated to pursue a career in accounting due to the influence of their family members.

Conclusion

From the results of this study, it appears that IQ, SQ, and knowledge of the public accounting profession have a greater role in determining the interest of students to attend the education of the accounting profession compared to motivation and EQ. Therefore, it is important for the university to pay more attention in increasing these three aspects through relevant career orientation programs, seminars, and training.

Recommendations

With a better understanding of these factors, it is hoped that academics can develop more effective strategies in attracting students to attend accounting profession education and equip them with the skills needed to succeed in career in the field of accounting. Some recommendations include:

Developing career orientation programs that focus on IQ, SQ, and knowledge of the public accounting profession
Providing training and seminars that help students to develop their IQ, SQ, and knowledge of the public accounting profession
Encouraging students to participate in extracurricular activities that help them to develop their IQ, SQ, and knowledge of the public accounting profession

Limitations

This study has several limitations that should be noted. Firstly, the sample size was relatively small, which may limit the generalizability of the findings. Secondly, the study only focused on the accounting program at the University of North Sumatra, which may not be representative of other institutions. Finally, the study only analyzed the effect of IQ, EQ, SQ, and knowledge on student interest, which may not be the only factors that influence student interest.
