Introduction

Tourism is a sector that continues to grow and is one of the drivers of economic growth in Indonesia. Geotourism, which combines elements of nature, culture, and education, is increasingly popular among tourists. One of the key concepts in the development of geotourism is Identity place, which consists of four principles: distinctiveness, continuity, self-esteem, and self-efficacy. Of the four principles, distinctiveness becomes a key factor that attracts tourists to a destination. Factors that influence distinctiveness include the existence of landmarks, unique places, special characteristics, and tourist perceptions.

Muara District, which is located on the edge of Lake Toba, has great potential to be developed into a geotourism destination in North Sumatra. However, to increase its appeal, efforts need to be made to increase distinctiveness of Muara District. This study aims to examine the aspects of distinctiveness geotourism in Muara District to be better known.

Methodology

This study uses a mixed method by combining quantitative and qualitative data. Quantitative data is obtained through the distribution of questionnaires to 100 respondents, while qualitative data are obtained through observation and interviews with key informants. The use of mixed methods allows for a more comprehensive understanding of the research problem, as it combines the strengths of both quantitative and qualitative approaches.

Results

The results showed several obstacles that needed to be overcome to increase distinctiveness of Geotourism of Muara District. These obstacles include:

Lack of Promotion

Promotion carried out by related parties is still less effective in attracting tourists.
The use of social media and digital platforms is limited, and there is a need for more intense and directed promotions.

Limitations of Information Features

Lack of features that can help tourists in obtaining information about tourist destinations.
The current tourist information center is incomplete and not easily accessible, and there is a need for a more comprehensive and user-friendly information system.

Lack of Cultural Attractions

Limitations of cultural attractions that can provide a unique experience for tourists.
There is a need for more cultural events and activities that can showcase the local culture and traditions.

Lack of Safety Facilities

Lack of visitor safety facilities at tourist sites.
