Introduction

The Saribudolok community in Simalungun Regency has been utilizing the Facebook Marketplace to promote their agricultural products, but there is a need to understand the marketing communication strategy used by this community and identify factors that need to be improved in product promotion on this platform. This qualitative descriptive study aims to explore the marketing communication strategy used by the Saribudolok village community in promoting agricultural products through the Facebook marketplace.

Background

The use of social media in marketing has become increasingly popular, especially in the agricultural sector. The Facebook Marketplace has proven to be a very effective platform for expanding market reach and increasing overall income. However, there are some challenges in product marketing on this platform, such as price uncertainty and inconsistencies with conventional market prices that can cause buyer's distrust. To overcome these challenges, traders need to understand and master the platform, as well as applying unique branding in their advertisements.

Methodology

This study employed a qualitative descriptive approach, using purposive sampling through interviews to collect data from informants. The informants were divided into two groups, namely the main informants and key informants. The main informant consists of a member of the Saribudolok Village community totaling four people, while the key informant consists of a communication expert from the Department of Communication Sciences, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of North Sumatra. Data validity was guaranteed through data authentication.

Results

The results showed that there were no significant differences in the marketing strategy used by the main informants. However, the use of Facebook Marketplace has proven to be very effective in expanding market reach and increasing overall income. Although there are some differences in strategies, such as the use of agricultural buying and selling groups other than Facebook Marketplace by several informants, these findings provide an overview of the market potential that can be further explored.

The use of the Facebook Marketplace not only helps in reaching new customers but also in building a community and buyers who support each other. Traders who are able to build trust with customers through positive interactions on this platform have the potential to develop a more loyal customer base.
