Introduction

The development of advanced magnetic materials has been a significant area of research in recent years, with applications in various fields such as telecommunications, radiation protection, and modern material technology. One of the key challenges in the synthesis of magnetic materials is the ability to control their structure, morphology, and magnetic properties. In this study, we report the synthesis of Bafe12-2XMGXALXO19 magnetic materials based on commercial raw materials and natural iron sand from West Sumatra, with a focus on their potential application in micro wave absorption technology.

Background

Barium hexa-ferrite (Bafe12O19) is a hard magnetic material based on oxide iron, which has been widely used in various applications due to its high magnetic properties. However, the development of new magnetic materials with improved properties is an ongoing research area. In this study, we have synthesized Bafe12-2XMGXALXO19 powder using two methods, namely solid state reaction and co-prespiration. The solid state reaction method involves mixing and milling Bafe12O19, MGO, and Al2O3 powder using the High Energy Milling (HEM) technique, while the co-presipitating method involves mixing raw materials such as BaCl2, FeCl3, MGCl2, AlCl3, and natural iron sand from West Sumatra Province, and depositing them using a 4M NaOH solution.

Experimental Methods

The synthesis of Bafe12-2XMGXALXO19 magnetic materials was carried out using various techniques, including X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM-EDS), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM), Vibrating Sample Magnetometry (VSM), and Vector Network Analyzer (VNA). The XRD analysis was used to determine the crystal structure of the synthesized materials, while the SEM-EDS and FE-SEM analysis were used to study their morphology and composition. The VSM analysis was used to determine the magnetic properties of the materials, including their saturation value (MS), remanence (MR), and energy products (BHMAX).

Results and Discussion

The results of the analysis show that the addition of Mg2+ and Al3+ ions does not change the hexagonal structure of the barium hexaferrite. However, the substitution of MG and AL ions changes the lattice parameters and affects the magnetic properties of the material. The addition of Mg and Al ions causes a decrease in the saturation value (MS), remanence (MR), and energy products (BHMAX), but increases the coercivity value (HC). The optimum condition in this synthesis is obtained in the composition of x = 0.1% mol with a calcination temperature of 1050ºC, producing MS of 44.75 emu/g, MR of 21.86 emu/g, HC of 2358 koe, and BHMAX of 73558 goe.

Conclusion

The synthesis of Bafe12-2XMGXALXO19 magnetic materials based on commercial raw materials and natural iron sand from West Sumatra has been successfully carried out using two methods, namely solid state reaction and co-prespiration.
