The Potential of Introduced Fish into Invasive Fish in the Waters of Lake Toba, Onan Runggu District

Introduction

Lake Toba, located in the Onan Runggu District, is one of the largest lakes in Southeast Asia, covering an area of approximately 1,130 square kilometers. The lake is a vital source of livelihood for the local community, providing a means of income through fishing and other related activities. However, the introduction of non-native fish species into the lake has raised concerns about the potential for invasive species to disrupt the delicate balance of the ecosystem. This study aims to investigate the potential of introduced fish into invasive fish in the waters of Lake Toba, with a focus on the diversity of introduced fish species, their potential to become invasive, and the relationship between fish existence and physical-chemical factors.

Methodology

The study was conducted from March to May 2021, with a focus on four stations chosen using the Purposive Sampling method, considering community activities around the location. Fish samples were obtained using nets, then identified and analyzed based on several parameters, including fish density, relative density, presence frequency, diversity index, uniformity index, dominance index, and the relationship between physical-chemical factors and the potential for invasive fish.

Results

The results of the study showed that there were five types of fish introduced into the lake. The diversity index (H) of fish was relatively low, ranging from 0.4153 to 0.7573, while the uniformity index (E) was at a moderate level, ranging from 0.2996 to 0.5463. The dominant index value in all four stations showed the dominating fish species. Based on the characteristics of invasive fish, an introduced fish species that has the potential to become invasive fish is amphilophus citrinellus. This fish is classified as carnivores with canine and molariform teeth, and recorded dominance in catching products in all stations studied.

Discussion

Further analysis showed that physical-chemical factors that significantly affect the density of fish in these waters include light intensity, light penetration, and dissolved oxygen levels (DO), BOD5, nitrate, and phosphate. The quality of water that is not balanced due to the entry of introduced fish can interfere with local ecosystems. Therefore, it is essential to supervise and manage fisheries resources wisely to avoid the negative impacts caused by invasive species.

Conclusion

In the context of conservation and management of natural resources, the results of this study provide a deeper understanding of the potential of introduced fish that become invasive fish in Lake Toba. Mitigation efforts need to be carried out to maintain the balance of the Lake Toba aquatic ecosystem and the sustainability of community life that depends on these aquatic resources. Thus, the control and supervision of the introduced fish species become increasingly urgent to maintain the Lake Toba ecosystem.
