Introduction

Sitophilus Zeamais Motsch, commonly known as the corn seed borer beetle, is a significant pest that causes substantial losses in corn seed storage (Zea mays L.). Effective management of this pest is crucial to maintain the quality and quantity of yields. One alternative in controlling this pest is the use of vegetable insecticides. This study aims to test the effectiveness of several types of vegetable insecticides in tackling S. Zeamais mortality, which can threaten corn seeds.

Background

The corn seed borer beetle is a major pest that affects corn seed storage worldwide. The beetle's larvae feed on the seeds, causing damage and reducing the quality of the seeds. Effective management of this pest is essential to maintain the quality and quantity of yields. Chemical insecticides are commonly used to control this pest, but they often have negative impacts on the environment. Therefore, there is a need to explore alternative methods of controlling this pest.

Methodology

This study was conducted at the Laboratory of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra, Medan, using a complete non-factorial random design that included 10 treatments. The treatments included control, castor seed powder, soursop seed powder, and Morinda Citrifolia seed powder, each at a dose of 5 grams, 10 grams, and 15 grams per 400 grams of corn seeds. Each treatment was repeated three times.

Results

The results of this study showed that the addition of the dose of seed powder significantly increased S. Zeamais adult mortality, reducing the number of new adults, and reducing weight loss in corn seeds during storage. Further analysis showed that there was no correlation between the application of seed powder with seed sprouts.

The treatment with the highest dose, which was 15 grams of seed powder per 400 grams of corn (F3 treatment), resulted in the highest percentage of mortality reaching 98.33%. Conversely, the F7 treatment, which used the Morinda Citrifolia seed powder at a dose of 5 grams per 400 grams of corn, indicated the highest percentage of sprouts of 99.33%.

Discussion

The results of this study suggest that vegetable insecticides are promising alternatives in controlling S. Zeamais pests, as well as safe for corn seeds to be planted. By using natural ingredients, farmers can reduce dependence on chemical insecticides that often have a negative impact on the environment. Therefore, the use of vegetable insecticides should be the main choice in post-harvest pest management, to maintain more sustainable and environmentally friendly agricultural products.

In a broader context, this research emphasizes the importance of exploration and utilization of local vegetable resources as an insecticide, which is not only useful for controlling pests but also supports the principles of sustainable agriculture. This knowledge is expected to increase farmers' awareness of the importance of environmentally friendly pests and support agricultural sustainability in Indonesia.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this study has demonstrated the effectiveness of vegetable insecticides in controlling S. Zeamais mortality in corn seeds. The results of this study suggest that the use of vegetable insecticides is a promising alternative to chemical insecticides, which can have negative impacts on the environment. Therefore, the use of vegetable insecticides should be the main choice in post-harvest pest management, to maintain more sustainable and environmentally friendly agricultural products.
