Introduction

Soil is a vital component of the ecosystem, providing essential nutrients and support for plant growth. However, some soils, such as Ultisol, have physical properties that are not ideal for plant growth. Ultisol is a type of soil that has a clay texture with a rather firm consistency, slow permeability, and poor soil stability, making it vulnerable to erosion. These conditions make Ultisol poor in terms of physical and poor nature of nutrients. To increase soil fertility and plant productivity, soil and water conservation techniques are important. One way to improve soil fertility is by providing soil-enhancement materials that can improve the physical properties of Ultisol.

The Importance of Soil-Enhancement Materials

Soil-enhancement materials, such as latex and manure, can play a crucial role in improving the physical properties of Ultisol. Latex, a natural polymer, can help to improve soil aggregate stability, while manure, a rich source of nutrients, can help to increase soil fertility. In this study, the effect of giving latex and manure on several physical properties of Ultisol and the growth of corn plants (Zea mays L.) was investigated.

Methodology

The study was conducted in Kelurahan Kwala Bekala, Simalingkar B, Medan, from January to March 2001. The experimental design used was a factorial random design (shelf) with two treatment factors and three replications. The latex treatment factor (L) consisted of four levels: without latex, 10 ml/plot, 20 ml/plot, and 30 ml/plot. While the manure factor (P) consisted of three levels: without manure, 0.5 kg/plot, and 1 kg/plot. The combination of the treatment tested amounted to 36 experimental units, and the data obtained were analyzed using the F test with a significance level tested by the Duncan Multiple Test (UJGD).

Results

The results showed that latex administration had a very significant effect on soil aggregate stability, but had no significant effect on the weight of soil contents, total pore space, dry weight over plants, and dry weight under plants. The best aggregate stability is obtained at the level of 30 ml of latex per plot.

On the other hand, manure is proven to significantly increase the aggregate stability index, dry weight over plants, and dry weight under plants, but does not significantly affect the weight of the contents and total soil pore space. The highest aggregate stability index is obtained in the provision of manure as much as 0.5 kg per plot (P2), while the dry weight of the highest plant is achieved in the provision of manure as much as 1 kg per plot (P1), and the highest dry weight of the plant in the administration of 1 kg manure per plot (P1).

Interaction between Latex Treatment and Manure

The interaction between latex treatment and manure shows a very significant result of increasing the aggregate stability index. The combination of 30 ml of latex per plot and 1 kg of manure per plot is proven to provide the best results in terms of aggregate stability.

Conclusion

Overall, this study shows that the administration of latex and manure can significantly affect the physical properties of Ultisol and the growth of corn plants. Efforts to improve soil through the use of organic materials and soil improvement materials such as latex are very important to increase agricultural productivity, especially in soils that do not support plant growth. In the future, further research can be carried out to explore other combinations of treatment that might provide more optimal results in improving the physical properties of soil and plant growth.
