Effects of Variation of Planetary Ball Mill (PBM) Time Variations on NDFEB Powder on Microstructure, Physical Properties, and Magnets

Introduction

The development of permanent magnets from rare earth materials, such as Neodymium Iron Boron (NDFEB), has been a significant area of research in recent years. The properties of these magnets, including their magnetic strength, durability, and resistance to corrosion, make them essential components in various industrial applications. However, the production of high-quality NDFEB magnets requires careful control of the manufacturing process, including the milling time and method. In this study, we investigate the effects of varying the milling time using a Planetary Ball Mill (PBM) on the physical and magnetic properties of NDFEB powder.

Experimental Methodology

In this experiment, two milling methods were applied: wet grinding and dry grinding, with a ball ratio of 1:10. For wet milling, the powder was dried for 10 hours at 60 ° C in a vacuum condition with a pressure of 11 MB. Furthermore, 5% Celuna (WE-518) was added based on the weight of the NDFEB powder for the printing process. Printing was done with the help of a magnetic field with a pressure of 25 kgf/cm². The final stage of this process was curing at 180 ° C (in a vacuum with a pressure of 11 MB) for 1 hour.

Characterization Techniques

The magnetic characterization produced includes XRD analysis, density flux measurements using Gaussmeters, as well as measuring powder density, bulk density, NDFEB morphology using SEM, and analysis of particle size with PSA. The measurement results were used to determine the optimal PBM milling time.

Results and Discussion

The measurement results showed that the optimal PBM milling time was 3 hours. In this condition, the bulk density value for wet mill reached 5,896 g/cm³ and for dry grinding of 5,981 g/cm³. In addition, powder density recorded 7.75 g/cm³ (wet milling) and 7.79 g/cm³ (dry milling). The particle size distribution showed 10.74 μm for wet grinding and 13.12 μm for dry grinding. Density flux was also measured by a value of 1058.2 Gauss in dry mill and 977.5 Gauss in wet milling.

Through XRD analysis, it appeared that the resulting powder was undergoing phase and microstructure changes. The results showed that the longer the milling time, the number of pores in the magnetic structure produced was less.

Analysis

The effect of milling time on the magnetic and physical properties of NDFEB provides an important insight into how process parameters can affect the final outcome. In the grinding process, changes in mechanical energy received by powder can cause variations in micro structure and interactions between particles. Along with the increase in milling time, there will be a reduction in particle size and reduction of pores that can increase density and magnetic flux.

From the measurement results, it was known that dry milling gave a higher density value than wet grinding. This may be caused by loss of solvents and evaporation that can reduce the volume of powder when wet grinding.

Conclusion

The selection of the right method and time of milling in making NDFEB is very crucial in determining the physical and magnetic properties of the final product. These findings are not only relevant to practical applications in the field of magnetic material, but also provide a strong scientific basis for further research on optimization of other rare soil magnetic manufacturing processes. Through this approach, it is expected that the quality and performance of the magnetism produced can be more leverage, and meet the various needs of modern industry applications.
