Response to Growth and Production of Sorghum (Sorghum Bicolor (L.) Moench) to the Administration of Plastic Mulch and Natural ZPT Extract Moringa Leaf Extract

Introduction

Sorghum (Sorghum Bicolor (L.) Moench) is a plant with high economic value that can grow in various land conditions. It is an important crop for food and feed production, particularly in tropical regions. However, the growth and production of sorghum can be influenced by various factors, including the use of plastic mulch and natural regulators. This study aims to determine the growth and production response of sorghum to the application of plastic mulch and the use of natural regulator (ZPT) derived from Moringa leaf extract.

Materials and Methods

The study was conducted on Jalan Bunga Terunt, Medan Selayang District, Medan, in the period January to May 2023. The research design used was a separate plot design (RPT) with two treatment factors and three replications. The main factor in this study is the application of mulch consisting of two treatments, namely without mulch (M0) and using plastic mulch (M1). While the subplot factor is the concentration of Moringa leaf extract consisting of four treatments, namely control (E0), concentration of 50 ml/L (E1), 75 ml/L (E2), and 100 ml/L (E3).

The parameters measured in this study include plant height, stem diameter, fresh weight of waste, dry weight of waste, seed weight per sample, seed weight per plot, a thousand seed weight, panicle weight, and biomass weed. The results showed that mulch treatment and interaction between the two treatments did not have a significant effect on all measured parameters. However, the treatment of ZPT concentration of Moringa leaf extract is proven to have a significant effect on all observed parameters.

Results and Discussion

The results of this study showed that the use of plastic mulch did not have a significant effect on the growth and production of sorghum. However, the use of natural ZPT derived from Moringa leaf extract showed promising results. Moringa leaf extract is known to be rich in natural hormones that can stimulate plant growth, increase photosynthesis, and increase plant resistance to various diseases. The optimal ZPT concentration can help plants in obtaining adequate nutrition and increase the weight of the harvest.
