The Effect of Plant Age on Palm Oil Productivity (Elaeis Guineensis): A Case Study in the People's Plantation in Pegajahan District, Serdang Bedagai Regency

Introduction

Palm oil plantations in North Sumatra, particularly in Serdang Bedagai Regency, play a vital role in the community's economy. However, not all people's oil palm plantations are able to achieve optimal productivity. One crucial factor that affects productivity is the age of the plant. This study aims to analyze the effect of plant age on the production of fresh fruit bunches (FFB) on people's oil palm plantations in Pegajahan District, Serdang Bedagai Regency.

Background

Palm oil is one of the most widely traded commodities in the world, and Indonesia is the world's largest producer of palm oil. The palm oil industry has a significant impact on the economy of North Sumatra, particularly in Serdang Bedagai Regency. However, the productivity of palm oil plantations in the region is still relatively low compared to other regions in Indonesia. One of the factors that contribute to low productivity is the age of the plant. As plants get older, their productivity tends to decrease.

Methodology

This study uses the purposive sampling method for the determination of the study area and the quota sampling method for sample determination. Data was collected through surveys and direct interviews with farmers who have plantations. Linear regression analysis is used to analyze the effect of plant age on FFB production, because the function of oil palm production has an optimum point and has decreased production at a certain time.

Results

The results of this study showed that plant age has a significant effect on the productivity of FFB. This means that the older the plant is, the lower the productivity. This is caused by several factors, such as:

Decreased absorption of nutrition: As we get older, the roots of oil palm plants experience a decrease in ability to absorb nutrients from the soil. This results in the availability of nutrition for the growth and production of fruit to be reduced.

Decreased ability of photosynthesis: Aging plant leaves have decreased the ability of photosynthesis, so that the process of energy formation needed for the growth and production of fruit is inhibited.

Decreased health of plants: Old plants are more susceptible to disease and pests, which in turn can reduce the quality and quantity of fruit production.

Discussion

The composition of the age of the plant also plays an important role in determining productivity per hectare. Plantation with the dominance of teenage plants and old tends to have low productivity. Conversely, plantations with a higher proportion of adult plants and teruna tend to produce better productivity.

Recommendations

Based on the results of this study, the following recommendations can be applied to increase the productivity of People's Palm Oil Plantation:

Application of mixed planting systems: Planting various types of plants in one land, such as intercropping plants or ground cover plants, can help in maintaining soil fertility, suppressing weed growth, and increasing biodiversity.

Appropriate fertilization: The use of organic and inorganic fertilizers in a balanced manner according to the needs of plants can help increase the absorption of nutrients and increase productivity.

Pruning and Maintenance: Routine pruning of dried leaves and branches that can routinely help increase air circulation, reduce pest and disease attacks, and increase photosynthesis efficiency.

Utilization of appropriate technology: Application of appropriate technology such as the use of organic fertilizer, biopesticides, and efficient irrigation systems can help increase productivity and reduce production costs.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the age of oil palm plants has a great influence on FFB productivity. Therefore, farmers need to pay attention to the composition of the age of plants in their plantations and apply the right management strategies to increase productivity and maintain land sustainability. This is important to improve the welfare of farmers and increase the contribution of oil palm plantations to the regional economy.

This study has several limitations. Firstly, the study only focused on the effect of plant age on FFB productivity, and did not consider other factors that may affect productivity.
