Introduction

In the banking world, credit risk is one of the most critical aspects to be analyzed, especially for foreign banks operating in Indonesia. The Indonesian market is a significant hub for foreign banks, and understanding the factors that affect their credit risk is essential for maintaining financial stability. This study aims to identify the effect of several variables on foreign bank credit risk in Indonesia, including Return on Assets (ROA), Return on Equity (ROE), Growth Gross Product Growth (GDP), Exchange Rate, Bank Indonesia Certificate (SBI) Certificate, Inflation, and Bank Size.

Foreign banks operating in Indonesia face unique challenges, including a rapidly changing economic environment, increasing competition, and regulatory requirements. Credit risk is a significant concern for foreign banks, as it can have a substantial impact on their profitability and reputation. Methodology

This study uses secondary data from the financial statements of ten foreign banks in Indonesia during the period 2007 to 2012. The data collection methods involve documentation, and data analysis is carried out using multiple linear regression analysis, with the F test for simultaneous testing and testing T for partial testing with a significance level of 5%.

From the results of the study, it was found that the variable return on assets, return on equity, GDP growth, inflation, exchange rates, SBI interest rates, and bank sizes simultaneously have a significant effect on credit risk. However, when viewed partially, there are some interesting findings:

Return on Equity (ROE)

Negative and significant effect on credit risk: This shows that banks that get higher profits relative to their equity tend to experience higher credit risk. This phenomenon may be caused by a more aggressive investment policy to achieve a higher rate of return.
Aggressive investment policy: Banks that pursue a more aggressive investment policy to achieve a higher rate of return may experience higher credit risk. This suggests that banks that take on more risk may be more likely to experience credit risk.

Inflation and Exchange Rate

Positive but not significant influence on credit risk: High inflation can affect customer purchasing power, which leads to the possibility of failure to pay. Meanwhile, exchange rate fluctuations can affect the payment of customer debt that borrowed in foreign exchange, although it does not show a significant effect in the context of this study.

Bank Size

For regulators, these findings can be used as consideration to increase financial system stability through tighter supervision of foreign banks in Indonesia.
