Arabic Immigrant Perceptions of Medan City Communities: A Qualitative Descriptive Study of Intercultural Communication

Introduction

Medan City, a melting pot of various cultures, languages, and religions, has long been a hub for immigrants seeking a better life. Among these immigrants are the Arab community, who have been an integral part of the city's fabric for decades. However, despite their significant presence, little is known about their perceptions of the local community. This study aims to fill this knowledge gap by exploring the perception of Arab immigrant communities regarding their interactions with local communities in Pasar III, Tanjung Sari Village, Medan Selayang District, Medan City.

Methodology

This qualitative descriptive study employed a snowball sampling technique to select five Arab immigrants as research subjects. In-depth interviews were conducted to gather data on their experiences and perceptions towards local communities. The data analysis tools developed by Miles and Huberman were used to analyze the data.

Results

The results of this study showed that the Arab immigrant community had a positive perception of the people of Medan City. They described the people of Medan as good, friendly, and warm, with an open social system that provides freedom to its members, both men and women. The people of Medan were also noted to be non-judgmental and non-discriminatory in their interactions.
