Introduction

Hypertension is a major risk factor for coronary heart disease and stroke, and its incidence is closely related to a person's diet. In North Sumatra, the prevalence of hypertension in individuals over 18 years old reached 24.7%, with a higher prevalence in individuals with low levels of education and those who do not work. This study aims to identify the factors that affect the diet of hypertensive patients in the Sembiring Deli Hospital.

Background

Hypertension is a major public health concern worldwide, and its management requires a comprehensive approach that includes lifestyle modifications, such as a healthy diet. A healthy diet is essential for preventing further complications of hypertension, such as coronary heart disease and stroke. However, many hypertensive patients do not have adequate knowledge about a healthy diet, which may be due to a lack of education and awareness about nutrition.

Methodology

This study used an observational-analytic method with a cross-sectional design. The sample consisted of 95 hypertensive patients with complications, aged between 40 to 65 years, who were treated in the Internal Poly of Sembiring Hospital in Deli Tua District, Deli Serdang Regency. The sampling technique used was accidental sampling. The variables studied included the level of education, knowledge, attitudes, income, employment status, the role of health workers, and eating patterns. Data analysis was carried out using the Chi-Square test and multiple logistics regression.

Results

The results showed a significant relationship between the level of patient knowledge and a good diet, with a probability ratio (PR) of 2.883. In addition, the patient's attitude shows the highest PR of 5.029, indicating that a positive attitude has a big influence on healthy diet. The level of income also correlates with a diet, with PR of 2,937, while the role of health workers has PR 5,021. All p values of these variables are less than 0.05, indicating strong significance.

Discussion

The results of this study suggest that the attitude of hypertensive patients is a dominant factor that affects eating patterns, with PR of 4,486. This shows that the mental attitude of patients in the face of hypertension is very important in determining the diet they choose. The level of education and income also play a significant role in determining the diet of hypertensive patients. However, the role of health workers in providing nutrition services and education to patients is also crucial in promoting healthy eating habits.

Conclusion

Based on the results of this study, it is recommended to the Sembiring Deli Old Hospital to add nutrition services for patients with degenerative diseases, especially hypertension. Provision of better nutritional consulting services and leaflets or diet guidelines that can be brought home by patients to be applied in daily life will be very helpful. With these steps, it is expected that hypertensive patients can better understand the importance of healthy diet to prevent further complications.

Recommendations

Add nutrition services: The Sembiring Deli Old Hospital should add nutrition services for patients with degenerative diseases, especially hypertension.
Provide better nutritional consulting services: The hospital should provide better nutritional consulting services to patients, including education and counseling on healthy eating habits.
Develop leaflets or diet guidelines: The hospital should develop leaflets or diet guidelines that can be brought home by patients to be applied in daily life.
Improve knowledge and attitudes: The hospital should improve knowledge and attitudes about eating patterns among hypertensive patients to support long-term health improvement.

Limitations

This study has several limitations, including the small sample size and the use of accidental sampling. Future studies should use a larger sample size and a more representative sampling technique to increase the generalizability of the results.

Future Directions

Future studies should investigate the effectiveness of nutrition services and education programs in promoting healthy eating habits among hypertensive patients. Additionally, studies should explore the role of health workers in providing nutrition services and education to patients.
