Introduction

The increasing population growth rate in urban areas such as Binjai City has led to a significant increase in greenhouse gas emissions. Household activities are one of the major sources of greenhouse gas emissions, including the use of energy in the form of LPG, fuel for daily transportation, and the use of electricity, as well as emissions from domestic liquid waste and household waste. This study aims to calculate the amount of greenhouse gas emissions (CO2 and CH4) from household activities in Binjai and determine the scenario to reduce the emissions.

Background

Binjai City is an urban area with a population density of 3,065 people per square kilometer. The increasing population growth rate has led to an increase in the amount of greenhouse gas emissions produced. The use of energy in the form of LPG, fuel for daily transportation, and the use of electricity are some of the major sources of greenhouse gas emissions in Binjai City. In addition, emissions from domestic liquid waste and household waste also contribute to the total greenhouse gas emissions.

Methodology

The calculation method used in this study follows the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) guidelines in 2006. The calculation results show that CO2 emissions from the use of LPG reached 2,025.82 tons of CO2EQ per month, while from the use of fuel for daily transportation is 3,484,848 tons of CO2EQ per month, and from the use of electricity reaches 151,939 tons of CO2EQ per month. For CH4 emissions, domestic liquid waste produces 12,012,461 tons of CO2EQ per month, while household waste accounts for 27,536 tons of CO2EQ.

Results

The calculation results show that the total greenhouse gas emissions from household activities in Binjai City are significant. The use of energy in the form of LPG, fuel for daily transportation, and the use of electricity are some of the major sources of greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, emissions from domestic liquid waste and household waste also contribute to the total greenhouse gas emissions.

Scenario to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions

This study proposes four scenarios to reduce CO2 emissions. The first scenario is the use of mass transportation such as BRT (Bus Rapid Transit). The second scenario is the use of a bicycle for a trip with a maximum distance of 5 km. The third scenario includes the replacement of LPG stoves with an induction stove, and the fourth scenario is to turn off the lights and electronic devices when not in use. Of the four scenarios, the second and fourth scenarios were selected for implementation.

Implementation of Scenarios

The implementation of the identified scenario will not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but also encourage people to further participate in protecting the environment. Encouraging the use of environmentally friendly transportation such as bicycles can help not only in reducing emissions but also improving public health through physical activity. In addition, a campaign to kill electronic devices when not used can be a small step that has a big impact if applied consistently by the community.
