Schiff Base Synthesis through the Condensation of Dialdehyde Cellulose with Urea and its Use as Cadmium Ion Adsorption (CD²⁺)

Introduction

Schiff bases have been widely studied for their potential applications in various fields, including catalysis, materials science, and environmental remediation. In this study, we report the synthesis of Schiff base through the condensation of dialdehyde cellulose with urea and its use as a cadmium ion adsorbent. The synthesized material was characterized using various techniques, including FT-IR spectroscopy, SEM, and adsorption studies.

Synthesis of Dialdehyde Cellulose

Dialdehyde cellulose (SDA) was synthesized from α-selulose through oxidation using sodium periodate as an oxidizer. The resulting SDA was characterized using FT-IR spectroscopy, which showed a peak at 1635.64 cm⁻¹, indicating the existence of the C = O aldehyde group. The degree of oxidation of SDA was found to be 80.9%, and the carbonyl content was 10.36%.

Synthesis of Schiff Base

The Schiff base was synthesized through the condensation of SDA with urea. The resulting material was characterized using FT-IR spectroscopy, which showed a peak at 1658.78 cm⁻¹, indicating the formation of the C = N bond of the imina group. The morphological analysis using SEM revealed changes in the surface structure that became larger and coarser.

Adsorption Studies

The effectiveness of the adsorption power of CD²⁺ ions was examined at various concentrations (100, 200, 300, 400, and 500 ppm). Maximum absorption in each component (0.1 g of cellulose, cellulose dialdehyde, and Schiff base) occurred at a concentration of 300 ppm with each percentage of adsorption of 62.66%, 62.92%, and 63.84%.

Discussion

The results of this study show that the Schiff base products resulting from the condensation of dialdehyde cellulose with urea have a significant potential in increasing the adsorption of cadmium metal ions from the solution. Cadmium ions are dangerous pollutants that can cause various negative impacts on human health and the environment. Therefore, the development of an effective method for adsorbing this ion is very important for the application of wastewater treatment.

The high adsorption power of the Schiff base at a certain concentration can be interpreted as its more complex molecular structure encouraging a more efficient interaction reaction with metal ions. The combination of cellulose capability as a matrix with its structural modification through the creation of Schiff bases makes it a more effective tool in the adsorption process.

In conclusion, this study demonstrates the potential of Schiff base synthesized through the condensation of dialdehyde cellulose with urea as a cadmium ion adsorbent. The results of this study can contribute to the development of effective methods for wastewater treatment and make a valuable contribution to environmental sustainability.
