Test of Entomopathogenic Beauveria Bassiana and Metarrhizium Anisopliae Mushroom Efficacy for Mortality Larvae Phragmatoecia Castanae in the laboratory
Introduction
The use of entomopathogenic fungi as a biological control agent has gained significant attention in recent years due to their potential to reduce pest populations in a more environmentally friendly manner. Two of the most commonly used entomopathogenic fungi are Beauveria Bassiana and Metarrhizium Anisopliae. These fungi have been shown to be effective in controlling various pest species, including the Phragmatoecia Castanae, a species of pest that often attacks sugar cane. This study aims to investigate the efficacy of Beauveria Bassiana and Metarrhizium Anisopliae in infecting the larvae of Phragmatoecia Castanae and to determine the optimal concentration of conidia for maximum efficacy.
Methodology
The study was conducted at the Research and Development Laboratory of PTPN II Sei Sei Semayang from January to March 2008. The study applied the non-factorial method of complete random sampling with seven treatments, each repeated four times. The treatments used were:
B0 (control without treatment)
B1 (Beauveria Bassiana with conidia density 10^5)
B2 (Beauveria Bassiana with conidia density 10^6)
B3 (Beauveria Bassiana with conidia density 10^7)
M1 (Metarrhizium anisopliae with conidia density 10^5)
M2 (Metarrhizium anisopliae with conidia density 10^6)
M3 (Metarrhizium anisopliae with conidia density 10^7)
The parameters observed in this study were the percentage of larvae mortality, the percentage of larvae that became pupae, and the percentage of pupae that developed into imago.
Results
The results of the study showed that the treatment with entomopathogen mushrooms had a significant effect on larvae mortality. In the Beauveria Bassiana treatment, the highest mortality occurred in B3 treatment with 100%, followed by B2 (97.5%) and B1 (92.5%). Conversely, the control treatment (B0) showed mortality of 0%. Meanwhile, the percentage of larvae that changed to the highest pupa was found in the B0 control treatment (59.38%), whereas in B3 treatment, no larvae succeeded in becoming pupae.
On the other hand, for the treatment of anisopliae metarrhizium, the highest mortality of larvae was recorded in the treatment of M1 (80%), followed by M2 (70%) and M3 (55%). The percentage of larvae that became the highest pupa was in the treatment of M1 (32.5%), and M3 has the lowest value (16.25%). As for pupae that succeeded in becoming imago, the M1 treatment produced 25%, while M3 only reached 13.8%.

This study provides a clear picture of the potential use of entomopathogen mushrooms as a biological control agent in pest management, especially for the Phragmatoecia Castanae species. The effectiveness of Bassiana Beauveria and Metarrhizium Anisopliae shown in this study can provide more environmentally friendly alternatives than the use of chemical pesticides that often have a negative impact on ecosystems.
Beauveria Bassiana has proven to be more effective in reducing larvae populations than anisopliae metarrhizium, especially in higher conidia density. This shows that the selection of fungal types and concentration of conidia is very important to increase the efficacy of pest control.
