Introduction

Topogen peat soils play a vital role in agriculture, particularly in the Hutabagasan Village area, Doloksanggul District, Humbang Hasundutan Regency. The conversion of these peat soils from rice fields to Arabica coffee plantations and horticultural gardens has significant implications for the characteristics of the soil. This study aims to understand the changes in the characteristics of peat soils that are processed into rice fields and then their function is transferred into Arabica coffee plantations (Coffea arabica) and horticulture. The study was conducted at the Laboratory of Chemical Analysis and Soil Fertility and Research and Technology Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra.

Methodology

This study observes and describes three soil profiles of three different types of land use: rice fields (P1), Arabica Coffee Plantations (P2), and horticultural plantations (P3). Each type of land use is analyzed based on the morphology and characteristics of the soil. Soil samples are taken from each layer of soil profile to be analyzed in the laboratory. This soil analysis includes several parameters such as bulk density, pH H2O, cation exchange capacity (CTK), basic saturation, C-organic content, total N, and C/N ratio.

Analysis of Changes in Soil Characteristics

The results of the study showed that there were significant changes in characteristics in topogenic peat soils when they were diverted. Some of the changes observed include soil color, C-organic content, and C/N ratio. This change shows how the process of land conversion can affect the physical and chemical properties of the soil.

Soil Color

Soil color is often an indicator of soil health. In the use of paddy fields (P1), the color of the soil tends to be darker due to the accumulation of organic matter. Meanwhile, when switching to coffee plantations (P2) and horticulture (P3), the color of the soil can change to be brighter as organic material reduction due to differences in management patterns. The change in soil color can be attributed to the differences in agricultural practices, where coffee plantations and horticulture may not add organic matter to the soil as much as that is carried out in the paddy agricultural system.

C-organic Content

C-organic content is very vital for soil fertility. In this study, there was a decrease in the C-organic content from rice fields to coffee plantations and horticultural gardens. This may be caused by different agricultural practices, where coffee plantations and horticulture may not add organic matter to the soil as much as that is carried out in the paddy agricultural system. The decrease in C-organic content can affect the fertility and productivity of the soil, which can have significant implications for agricultural production.

C/N Ratio

The ratio of carbon to nitrogen (C/N) is also an important parameter in assessing the quality of the soil. A balanced C/N ratio is needed for an efficient decomposition process. This study shows that the C/N ratio changes along with land conversion, which can affect soil fertility and plant growth. The change in C/N ratio can be attributed to the differences in agricultural practices, where coffee plantations and horticulture may not add organic matter to the soil as much as that is carried out in the paddy agricultural system.

Conclusion

From the results of the analysis, it can be concluded that the change in the characteristics of topogenic peat soils that are processed into rice and then converted into Arabica and horticultural coffee crops affect the color of the soil, the C-organic content, and the C/N ratio. Understand that different management in land use can have a significant impact on land quality. Therefore, sustainable management and attention to the maintenance of organic matter in the soil is very important to maintain the fertility and productivity of agricultural land, especially in the context of coffee and horticultural agriculture in the region.

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:
