Introduction

Soil is a crucial element in construction, serving as a foundation support for various types of buildings. However, one common problem that arises is soft soil, particularly clay. In this study, gypsum powder is used as a soil amplifier material. Gypsum contains silica oxide, which functions as a binder of minerals with better properties compared to organic binding materials. In addition to its affordable price, gypsum also does not cause air pollution, is fireproof, resistant to damage caused by biological factors, and is resistant to chemicals. When added to water, gypsum powder hardens and is expected to increase the density of soft soil, thereby increasing its support capacity.

Research Methodology

Gypsum powder is mixed randomly with soil in variations of levels of 2%, 4%, 6%, 8%, 10%, 12%, 14%, 16%, 18%, and 20% of soil weight. This study aims to analyze the effect of adding gypsum powder on soil shear strength, maximum dry density, and CBR value. In addition, it will also be analyzed the ratio between the results of testing the parameters of soil shear strength through the Unconfined Compressive Test (UCT) and Triaxial Unconsolidated Undrained (UU) tests, as well as the comparison of laboratory test results with the Triaxial Testing Simulation UU which is carried out in the Plaxis 2D 201701 program.

Results and Discussion

The results showed that the maximum dry density (ℽdmax) of the soil decreased by the addition of gypsum powder. The highest maximum dry density is recorded at 1.60 g/cm³, while the lowest is 1.59 g/cm³. The value of shear strength (SU) from the UCT test results increased along with the addition of gypsum powder, where the lowest SU value was 0.90 kg/cm² and the highest reached 2.98 kg/cm², increased by 231%. In addition, the CBR value was not submerged increased by 285%, while the submerged CBR value increased by 377%. The addition of gypsum powder by up to 20% causes an increase in shear strength (Cu) from the triaxial test results of 339%, from 1.05 kg/cm² to 4.61 kg/cm². Although there are differences, the results of shear strength between the UCT and Triaxial Law tests do not show significant differences.

Triaxial Law Simulation

The Triaxial Law Simulation conducted using the Harding Soil model in the 2D plaxis program shows the results that are quite close to the results of laboratory tests, with the results of a relatively equal deviatic stress at 15% deformation. This finding shows that the use of gypsum as a soil amplifier material can be an effective solution to increase soft shear strength.

Conclusion

Thus, this research makes an important contribution in the development of soft soil improvement techniques and increases understanding of soil behavior reinforced using gypsum powder. Through this research, it is expected to open the way for more broad applications of gypsum in civil engineering, especially for projects involving soft soil.
