Introduction

Clean water is one of the basic needs for living things, including humans. However, the quality of peat water, which comes from surface water and ground water containing peat, often does not meet the standards for use as drinking water or raw water. To overcome this problem, filtration technology using rapid sand filters has been proven effective. In this study, the media used consisted of sand and gravel with a variety of sand media thickness of 60 cm, 90 cm, and 120 cm. The filtration rate applied in this study is 5 m³/m²/hour and 10 m³/m²/hour, producing six different variations based on thickness and filtration rate.

Methodology

Water sampling is carried out at a certain time interval, which is every 30, 60, 90, 120, and 150 minutes. Water samples are then tested to determine the pH and turbidity value using pH meters and turbidimeters. The efficiency of this filtration system is evaluated based on changes in turbidity and pH of raw water and filtration water. Statistical analysis using the ANOVA method with the help of SPSS application is carried out to determine the significance of the effect of media thickness and filtration rate.

Results

The results showed that the efficiency of the tool in reducing turbidity values ranged from 94% to 100%, while efficiency in increasing the pH value ranged from 82% to 100%. However, the thickness of the sand media does not have a significant effect on the decrease in turbidity or increased pH. Meanwhile, the filtration rate does not affect the turbidity value, but has a significant effect on the pH value.

With the increasing demand for clean water, especially in areas that have water quality problems such as in peat areas, this research is very relevant.
