Introduction

The cultivation of Siamese orange seeds (Citrus nobilis L.) is a significant industry in many parts of the world, with the fruit being highly prized for its unique flavor and aroma. However, the growth and development of these plants are highly dependent on various factors, including the size of the lower rootstock and the type of soil amendment used. In this study, we aim to evaluate the effect of the lower stem diameter of JapanSche Citroen (JC) on the growth of seed shoots, as well as the type of soil amendment given to the planting media topsoil Andisol.

The Importance of Lower Stem Diameter

The lower stem diameter of the rootstock is a critical factor in determining the growth and development of Siamese orange seeds. A larger diameter tends to support better growth because of the more developed roots, which helps the absorption of nutrients more efficiently. In this study, we examined the effect of three different lower stem diameters (7-11 mm, 12-15 mm, and 16-20 mm) on the growth of seed shoots.

Research Methodology

This study was conducted in Nagori Siboras, Simalungun Regency, from March to December 2016 using a random factorial group design involving two factors. The first factor under study was the diameter of the lower stem (D), which consisted of three different diameters (D1: 7-11 mm, D2: 12-15 mm, and D3: 16-20 mm). The second factor was the planting media (M), which consisted of eight different types of soil amendments (M0: Control, M1: Phosphorus fertilizer, M2: Rice straw, M3: Alang-alang leaves, M4: Chicken manure, M5: M2 + M3, M6: M4 + M2, and M7: M4 + M3).

Research Results

The results of this study showed that the diameter of the JC lower stem had a significant effect in increasing various parameters of shoot growth, including tunas height, number of leaves, total leaf area, diameter of the shoot stem, tunas weight, dry weight of shoots, leaf area ratio, and chlorophyll A and B. In addition, the use of the Andisol Amendment also made a positive contribution to the growth of seeds, with an increase in the number of shoots, number of leaves, total leaf area, diameter of the shoot stem, tunas weight, dry weight of shoots, relative growth rate, leaf area ratio, and chlorophyll A and B.

Interaction between Lower Stem Diameter and Soil Amendment

The interaction between the diameter of the JC lower stem and the type of planting media showed a significant increase in the dry weight of the shoots and the leaf area ratio, followed by an increase in the number of chlorophyll A and B. This suggests that the optimal combination between the diameter of the rootstock and the type of soil amendment can contribute to better results in conjoined orange cultivation.

Additional Analysis and Explanation

This study shows that the selection of exact root diameters is very important to maximize the growth of Siamese orange seeds. A larger diameter tends to support better growth because of the more developed roots, which helps the absorption of nutrients more efficiently. In addition, the type of soil amendment used also contributes a major contribution to growth. For example, the use of chicken manure not only provides nutrients but also increases the physical properties of the soil, such as aeration and water holding capacity.

Soil amendments containing organic matter, such as rice straw and reed leaves, also helps improve soil structure and increase microbial activity, which in turn can increase the availability of nutrients for plants. Thus, the optimal combination between the diameter of the rootstock and the type of soil amendment can contribute to better results in conjoined orange cultivation.
