The Medan City Cooperative and UMKM Office plays a vital role in mapping and developing micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in this city. However, preliminary research shows that the Medan City Cooperative and MSME Office does not yet have an analysis model to determine the effective MSME development strategy. In addition, data regarding MSMEs that have participated in the development program have also not been recorded properly. This study aims to address this challenge by designing an analysis model for determining the Medan City UMKM development strategy using the K-Means algorithm.

MSMEs play a crucial role in the economic growth of a city. They contribute significantly to the creation of employment opportunities, income generation, and innovation. However, MSMEs often face challenges such as limited access to capital, lack of skills, and inadequate market information. Therefore, it is essential to develop an effective MSME development strategy that addresses these challenges and provides targeted support to MSMEs.

K-Means Analysis Model: Solution to Map MSME Performance

To overcome the challenge of determining an effective MSME development strategy, this study designed the analysis model using the K-Means algorithm. This model aims to help the Medan City Cooperative and UMKM Office:

Understanding the performance of MSMEs: Through asset data analysis and business turnover, this model can group MSMEs into three categories: Good, Enough, and Less. This gives a clear picture of the physical condition of the business performance of the Medan City UMKM.
Determine the right development strategy: Based on the results of performance analysis, this model helps determine the right development strategy. This model provides recommendations for focused business development programs, both in the form of Training Education or Capital, in order to increase assets and turnover of MSME businesses.

Analysis Results: Peek at the Performance of Medan City MSME

This study analyzed 1350 Medan City UMKM data. The results show that:

Most MSMEs (83%) have poor business performance. This is categorized as Less cluster. *Only 4% of MSMEs are included in good clusters, and 13% are in the cluster enough. *Almost all MSMEs (98%) require business development recommendations. Only around 2% of MSMEs do not require recommendations.

Appropriate Development Strategies

From a total of 1329 MSMEs that require development recommendations, the analysis model suggests:

*Education and Training: As many as 78% of MSMEs are recommended to take part in education and training programs to increase knowledge and skills in managing businesses. *Capital: 22% MSMEs are recommended to get capital access to increase assets and expand businesses.

This analysis model with the K-Means algorithm provides significant benefits for the Medan City Cooperative and UMKM Office:
